disappointed and still puzzled.

I went out to a park this morning with my AT Pro, with a forecast of rain later in the morning. So I decided to rush out the door to do what I love. I was sweeping my Pro side to side and all of the sudden I get a faint but distinct high pitch sound reading between 82 and 99 depending where I was standing, and with a depth of 10+''. Though the "bing" was faint I started digging. I kept digging, making sure I was on the proper spot as I used my Pinpointer, but nothing. I dug a hole just about 2 feet deep and still nothing. My detector was telling me that something was there, with a very recognizable and high pitch sound, but my eyes couldn't see anything and my pinpointer couldn't find anything either. I kept telling myself, this is it; the next bit of dirt you dig is the one with the find. Finally, the rain started coming down, very hard I must say, and after a last "ditch" effort and still nothing to show for, I decided to call it quit and fill my hole. I left with a disgusted taste in my mouth, wondering what my detector had discovered. I guess we'll never know. Now, the big question: has any of you left a search without a find? and if so, please reassure me that I hadn't committed the ultimate detectorist sin to leave a dig without the goods, or not so goods. Thanks guys for any input.

Yeah, I have more then once. From experience I have learned most ghost signals are a rust spot in the dirt from the likes probably of a small nail, screw, or something similar. Once the dirt is broken up the rust isn't easy to spot and the signal also disappears. On occasion, it could be something like a b b, 22 short case, something small that you just miss with the pin pointer, but such is typically found by waving the coil over the dug dirt. Anyway, you are not alone. HH jim tn

Most do not post those hits when posting up good finds.. Nor do they post all the junk they find.

To a newbie it can be misleading as to the abilities of a detector and finds you can expect to hit.

The next time ( There will be) look at the dirt as you dig. See if in one area the color changes to rusty or darker color.. Something was there and you broke up the remnants while digging.
At that point the signal is gone.. Or it is a very tiny piece of metal you just missed when digging.. It could have been on the top of ground or just under and you moved it with the first dig..

Second perhaps is it's really big and deeper ............. Keep at it........You will get better ............

A few years abo while detecting with my AT Pro I got a solid 80 signal at four inches. I dug a plug and checked the plug and hole with my pin pointer. Nothing! I ran the AT over the hole and plug and again nothing. Then I looked at my digging tool and stuck in the middle of the root cutting slot was a mans silver ring. I have had this same thing happen with pull tabs.

You didnt sin!...walk away with no shame! Unless its a crisp tight solid hit!...sometimes those strange and hard to locate high ping signals are just a thin piece of trash metal, or a really deep can...the Pro is pretty deep, so I go after those deep 'what ifs' for a bit, and yes, I have walked away from plenty a signal without looking back...dont get disgusted...just one of those things is all, work the numbers and dont diddle around chasing ghosts is what I tell myself...takes place nearly every time out as it did for me again this morning and went balz deep for a can!.....those really solid profile tight crisp ping hits generally dont lie...

Theres a 55 gallon steel oil drum on one of my beaches that sounds just like a silver Q when its under 3' of sand..sounds like it could be a coin spill in fact,.....dont ask me how I know! I now use it as a reference locator though, to get my bearings and all that....so all was not lost in my effort is what I tell myself...and I cant imagine how many people sweeping this stretch of beach have dug it up too!....nice crisp tight profile pings...all the rest is usually trash, can tops or something...deeper mid tones a guy has to go after though...good on ya for the effort and post!:clapping:

I truly appreciate you guys for making me feel better about my disappointing dig and also for sharing your "not so good" experiences. Thanks a bunch:)
