disappearing signals

Have been using my new MXT for only a short time. On more than one occasion have gotten a solid audio response, checked the VDI, VDI locked, will stay locked for two or three sweeps THEN will start jumping all over the place.
Since it is not giving me a repeatable and locked on VID I've moved on. Depth readings have varied from 3" or 4" to 6" or 7".
I know the only way to find out for sure is to dig but would like to hear other peoples experiences with these changing signals.
A couple of times I have recieved a faint audio and coin like VDI with only one swing. then it's gone. Never to return again. No way to pinpoint. I think the really old coins are running away when they hear me coming. Any other ideas?

Well actually they went to cloak. <img src="/metal/html/smile.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":)">

If you are loitering with the coil over the target (or even partially), it is quite possible that the autotrak circuit starts to track out the target.
Try it again sometime, but with the graound balance in lock position.

Thanks Rudy. I'll try it. Around the old farmhouse here I lock the ground balance because of all of the man made iron that's around. But this particular park where this was happening has ground mineralization in the upper 50's to low 60's so I was tracking.
Also only had a couple of hours this particular day so didn't spend much time with the iffy signals.

DPW,
You must realize that the MXT is a really sensitive detector... A small piece of irregularly shaped foil at/or below the surface will cause a similar anomaly. It will cause your VDI to bounce around as well as your depth reading to state that it is a deep signal.
Of course, you have already figured out that the only way to know is to dig. If chose not to dig then you might be missing some good targets.
