Disappearing Pennies

After digging a good audio hit which reads at 28 I have had on several occasions "lost" the object and cannot get an audio hit anywhere near or at the whole I was digging. Knowing that 'something' must be there I keep searching and have found the objects, either by 'seeing' it or feeling it with the Vibraprobe. Three times this has happened and it has always been a wheat penny. Why would these pennies 'disappear' once I start digging them? Once I had them in my hand they once again made an audio noise as I cross the coil. One of these times when I had a fistful of dirt in my hand the "hum" in the earphone would 'null' out (no high pitch audio as it should) when I went over the coil. Upon further inspection of dirt in hand, the penny was found??? Whats up?

When it nulled out as you passed a handful of dirt with the penny in it over the coil was probably because a piece or two of iron was mixed in there with it, otherwise that sould not happen even if the penny was on edge.
Two things come to mainly mind when you say the coin disappears after starting the dig, one you may have broke the Halo effect the coin had, or two the coin fell back into the hole to a deeper level or fell on edge making it out of reach.
Other things that may be causing this is how all your settings are set, and are the setting set up for optimal performance or not. The last thing I would suspect would be malfunctioning electronics, but hopefully that is the case and you will be able to solve the problem, that is if there is one.
Good Luck/HH

Happens quite a bit on the deep coins after opening the hole up 7 or 8 inches.. also happens more often when running in auto sensitivity,, the secret is just keep diiging till you find it.. if it souned good before digging somethings down there... and I bet Mitch is right, bet there was also some iron mixed in with that dirt in your hand that time, and also you maye have knocked a rusty nail or something over the targets in the hole on the others.. just keep digging <IMG SRC="/forums/images/smile.gif" BORDER=0 ALT=":)">

Ted,
I just got the XS last fall and I had a similar situation. I knew I had a deep signal. It was week and kind of hard to pinpoint. After digging a substantial hole I couldn't get the signal I had before. I started to pass handfuls of dirt over the coil when all of a sudden it nulled out. I was curious to see what piece of junk made it null out and instead found a 1906 indian. I then passed over the same handful of dirt and it nulled out again. This time I found an old square nail. That moment was a great learning experience and it proved to me that the XS can really distinguish between junk objects and good targets that are very close.
Anyway, I think Jim and Mitch are right in their advice at what might of happened.
