Dirt detecting w/CZ-70Pro in ALL METAL Mode:

Guys, I need some advice on using my CZ-70Pro in ALL METAL Mode while dirt detecting. I've only hunted in DISCRIMINATE Mode, and I've talked to a couple people who use ALL METAL Mode all the time, while detecting on the BEACH!! Other than the obvious differences hunting Saltwater Beaches, do most of you CZ Users detect in ALL METAL or DISCRIMINATE while dirt detecting? MANY THANKS, hh, Les Robinson.

In All Metal mode you will detect every tiny piece of metal in the ground. Goes deeper than Disc mode but Disc mode is easier to work with. All Metal would be fine in areas where there is very little garbage.

unless you are prepared to really "crawl"..and i mean crawl along, then you should probably stick with disc mode!..your hunt will be more enjoyable, and you won't be discouraged so easily!..."all metal" may be useful in an open field for example where you may want to dig artifacts along with coins, but in an area that "teems" with aluminum trash, and iron,it can be discouraging, and unfortunately "most" public open areas are "loaded" with trash!

Les,
Beach is different animal than land. I have run all-metal on the beach many times. Digging bobby pins on the beach is easier than digging small nails on land. In my experience, there are a lot more nails on land than bobby pins and hair clips on the beach. A few small chains may be found in all-metal that you would miss in discriminate. Is it worth digging all the nails to find that one small chain? I think that is where the decision point is.

There are some tot-lots that are reasonably clean where I go all-metal. Other than that, on land I am in discriminate mode. Nice thing about the CZ is you can run minimum discrimination and use the tones to cut down on digging iron but still hear a signal. If there are very few low tones (iron), I may go all-metal ... but am almost always in discriminate mode at the lowest discrimination setting on land.

As with a flip of the disc. knob you are in all metal and vice versa to check all metal signals..Goes a little deeper in all metal(autotune) but biggest plus it covers more area for some reason basically like having a bit larger coil. Would think it would be a back breaker as you will pick up everything from fish hooks to bobbi pins. Have found silver with an analog but checked everything in disc. with a flip of the switch but not that easy with a digital. All in all would probably work well in a real old clean area but on a beach would be counterproductive as beaches are usually loaded with trash..

M-A-N-Y THANKS for taking the time!! I've always hunted in Disc.Mode, and with all the responses, IT'S A NO BRAINER!! I'll stay in Disc. Mode for my dirt detecting!! Les

good idea!.."all metal" will turn you into a "nutbag" in short order!

As Dan-Pa said, All Metal detects a larger area under the coil. That's a real advantage when detecting in large grassy areas, etc. that has very little trash. When I'm in an area like that I use All Metal and when I get a signal in All Metal then I switch over to Disc mode to pinpoint. The Cortes meter gives me the same info in both Disc mode and All Metal mode, but pinpointing is easier in Disc. So, in those large grassy areas All Metal helps by giving w-i-d-e-r coverage under the coil, picks up targets that are 5 inches or deeper that the narrower Disc mode could have missed, off to the side. Closer to picnic tables I use Disc mode only.

I have used a CZ since 1994. I currently use a CZ70 PRO. Each hunt is different. I took my detector with me to Holland this past summer and hunted tulip fields as well as salt water beaches. I hunt Civil War site here in Oklahoma as well as old house sites and even hit a park or two when I am really bored. From what I have been told and from 14 years of using a CZ, in discriminate mode, your signal into the ground would look like an upside down cone. Or in other words, the signal comes to a point underground. Using that analogy you can see how you really have to heavily overlap your swings to get the best coverage. In all metal mode, the signal is more straight down or bucket shaped. This is why you get more coverage and depth in all metal mode. This being said, what are you wanting to detect? On Civil War sites, you want to detect everything. Looking for house sites, you want to detect everything. On the beach you want to detect everything. On a play ground you want to discriminate. Or at least that is what I want. You can by the push of a button change from all metal mode to discriminate to let the detector tell you what it thinks the target is. I personally like to listen to the ground chatter. I know in an instant if there is a change from some kind of metal. If you hunt grassy areas in discriminate mode you will be getting a lot of "falsing" unless you really have the sensitivity turned way down. Then you will miss deep targets or smaller targets. Again, that may be your intentions. You can really tell when the ground mineralization changes in all metal mode. The chatter that I mentioned will change. A few things that I know for sure is that pull tabs and small rings sound alike. Square tabs and Minnie balls sound alike. Shotgun shells and Civil War buttons sound alike. Bobby pins and small chains sound alike. And beer bottle caps sound just like some denominations of Euros. And 1590 Holland coins sound very cool. I also know that weather condition, soil conditions, and ground condition and depth will change all of the above to some degree. I always dig at least the first 10 targets that I hear at any site just to learn what Iron sounds like on this site or what pull tab sound like on this site or beer bottle caps, I know you were wanting a quick answer and maybe you got it. But you have to know what you are listening to before you discriminate it out in my humble opinion. I have dug some mighty nice things on Civil War site because I run all metal mode. I have a few nice rings from beaches because I decided not to believe it was pull tab. Beaches are no brainers, you dig it all. It is to easy digging. Hard pan is different. If you have heard iron and dug iron several times, then it is up to you to dig or pass. I again will dig my first 10 or so targets just to get a feel for the conditions. Once you have run a couple hundred sets of batteries through your detector you instinctively know your setting without thinking about it. Again, I vote all metal mode depending on conditions and switch to discriminate mode to verify target then decide to dig or not. Just my 2 cents. (ok, may a buck and a half worth) Good luck with the CZ. It is a great machine.

I have 3 CZ's,, CZ 3d,CZ 5, CZ 70 and I hunt 90 % of the time with the 5" coil and Zero Disc.
Zero disc is not the same as all metal, if your in Zero disc and think you have found a clean spot, just check it in pin point mode.
The places that I have hunted here, the GB has been from 3.5 to 6.5.
I like the CZ's better than anything that I have tried, but something may work better in another area.
It comes down to what works in your area and if you under stand what its trying to tell you.

I love the modifcations. Now if you could add a couple more things so that we don't need a woman in our life.
