Dinging like crazy on rocks??

Hi everyone, i'm new to MD and this forum so need all the info i can get...my partner and i took the suggestions and bought a Garrett Ace 250 for our first detector. first time out in our backyard we dug HUGE holes and found nothing but a pipe. haha

next time out after a rain at the playground in gravel, we found lots of foil, a few pennies and a quarter, dime...

Next day we took it out to the desert (we live in phoenix, az) to the washes and had a crappy time of it. This thing was dinging like crazy on dark ROCKS! tried lower sensitivity, taking it off all metal to coin mode, heck we tried every mode....it kept hitting on ROCKS..we did manage to break a huge one open and it looked to me like a yellow streak that may be iron or something. (i know nothing about rocks)

We found a handful of spent bullet casings and that was it...it sucked...digging up rock after rock...

SO what is the deal with this? no we werent' searching for gold...How do we keep it from dinging on rocks? thanks for any help..

ACE

p.s. We are hooked on detecting already...went out in the front yard with a flashlight last night...haha

In my opinion that rock with the yellow streak needs to be researched by someone who knows what they are looking at. You may have discovered a gold vein! There are hot rocks that will give you a signal. Don't give up on the Ace, it is a very capable unit.

Here in Indiana i get into them ever so often, usually they are dark in color, and i even have a couple i kept that had so much iron content a magnet would stick to them, they would set any detector off unless i had them set and notched away from iron, ya justt need a little more experimenting and practice

You should have checked that yellow sreak out. Remember, gold is yellow. Where abouts were you hunting. I used to live in Phoenix many moons ago.

Here in VA gold is found in black sand; if I found a yellow streak in a black rock,in Arizona my next step would be to find myself a geologist.

Meteorites often have a high iron/nickel content. And, they often have a dark exterior. Some are almost completely iron/nickel. Most will cause a detector to sound off, especially if using all metal.

BTW meteorites are very valuable. It couldn't hurt to take them to a university for identification. The worst that can happen is they might get a good laugh.

Good luck
