What advantage is there to using the advanced smart mode rather than the advanced digital mode? Don't they both get the same depth? It seems easier to go by numbers than where the crosshairs are at on the display. I have yet to hunt with my explorer, so digital may be easier to start off with. However, I don't understand why a person would not use the digital mode all the time. Thanks for your help and patience with a rookie. Doug
 
I'm not an expert (yet). But I hunt only in smart because there are hundreds (I think) of different places for the cross hairs to hit and only a few numbers. Someone with more technical language should explain this better to him. In other words, if the numbers would read (which they don't) 22.17 that would break down the type of target more for you because as one type of target would read 22.17 another would read 22.19, but with digital all you would see is 22 or 23. Better stop. I'm starting to confuse myself..HAHA Good luck......D.
 
Daylight, I see what you are saying, but wouldn't you dig all 22.01 thru 22.99 anyway? If a coin is a 22, who cares if it's a 22.34 or a 22.89? See what I'm saying? Thanks for your help,

the main advantage of smart over digital is you can also see where the cross hairs fall left to right..in other words a copper or brass target could read 28 and and the same for silver..but in smart find, you'll see that the silver falls all the way to the left and the copper/brass target will be just left of center.
i like to hunt digital in the parks, but like to hunt smart find every where else.it's a little easier to interpet a bouncy target in digital than with the crosshair bonucing all over the screen.
hope the next upgrade will have a screen with both, but then again, i was just starting to get the hang of hunting by sound alone, just before the freeze.

Digital mode reads conductivity only (the bottom to top on smart screen), while smart find reads both conductivity as well as ferrous content. in other words a coin might read 28 on the digital and read far right on the smart screen, Now a piece of iron might also read 28 in instances but read far left on the smart screen, if in digita only they would read the same. This may not be a true example but just to let you understand what I am saying.
Also in smart find you sometimes catch an oddball reading where the curser doesnt normally fall, but sounds good.. these are usially good targets.
Main thing is learn how the audio reacts to good targets no matter what mode your in, the good thing about the smart screen if hunting mainly coins is, there are mainly only about a few spots on the smart screen where the majority of coins fall and little trash(except in the nickel range), even though there are many like digital readings on trash where coins read...
 
Hi Doug! Here is something to consider. If you travel any distance as some of us do looking for silver you have time and money invested. Using the smart mode lets you for example bypass most clad coins if you want. If I travel for an hour to get to a place I want to spend my time looking for silver and not clad. I can stay home and get my fill of clad if I want.
 
that silver is on the far right side (not the left)..
zig said it best, a clad coin and a silver coin both read 28 in digital. but on the smartfind you can tell then apart.

Jim stated it best down below, but in keeping with my train of thought if the coin read 22.06 you wouldn't want to dig 99 other targets that registered 22?? Conductivity is all you get in digital. You also get ferrous content in smartfind.I probably should have stayed out of it. Better keep quiet until I know more about this stuff.

vs. digital.In my opinion digital only allows you to use 1/2 the target analysis capability of your explorer,however it requires a little more of your thought process.This hopefully comes in time with your audio and visual experience.No expert here however I dont even know why minelab bothered with the small scale digital,,Wont quit rainin here..charlie hh
 
Smart screen offers the most accurate visual representation offering a unlimited combination of conductivity and inductance. It takes a while to learn where all the possible targets should fall but is more versatile. The Digital screen shows a numerical value for the conductivity of a target, and here is the diffrence, the machine takes the conductivity and inductance of the object and takes its best guess as to what the object might be and displays a graphic symbol next to the number. I think there is a ring, coin, and other junk symbols. The digital screen was probably put in as a aid for other brand detector users to get used to the machine in a format that they were used to as many other detectors use the numeric system as well. But yes the Digital mode does also give you inductance values (ferrous content) but the machine averages it out with the conductivity to give you its idea of what your coil is over. Hope this is clear. Its kind of confusing.
 
Actually the statement wrt the digital mode that it "...uses 1/2 the target analysis capability of your explorer..." is only partially correct.
The digital mode "numbers" are based on conductivity alone but the "icons" displayed are supposed to be based on the full conductivity plus inductivity analysis capability of the Explorer.
However, I personally don't use the icons much because I haven't found them all that useful. This is probably because I'm hunting for small numbers of "old" coins where the signals (and the target analysis) are usually less than ideal. In this style of hunting one tends to dig many more "iffy" signals and the smart mode seems to give the most information to allow you to make a dig/not dig decision.

I UNDERSTAND WHAT YOU GUYS ARE SAYING BUT LETS CUT TO THE CHASE WILL DIGITAL "MISS" ANY SIGNALS THAT CAN BE SEEN IN SMART.IN DIGITAL WHAT IS THE IRON REJECT/DISCRIM LEVEL AS IT IS NOT ADJUSTABLE IN THIS MODE WILL I LOOSE ANY DEEP TARGETS ESPECIALLY THE VERY SMALL HAMMERED COINS WHAT WE HAVE OVER HERE IN THE U.K WHICH ARE NO BIGGER THAN FOIL IN SOME CASES.

I have no experience with your small hammered coins but I'd guess you would lose some if you only hunted in the digital mode. It'd probably be best to hunt in the iron mask mode at very low levels (lower than -10) and then switch to disc if you wanted to do some analysis. Even then you wouldn't want any high disc settings in the smart mode or you probably wouldn't get a signal.
You might also be okay in smart mode with a low "iron mask" - type disc pattern (similar to the one Jim Upstate NY has mentioned in the past but possibly at lower settings).
Personally, while I've played around with it some, I've never done any extensive hunting in the digital mode. Mostly use the smart mode with very little disc.
