Digital mode on the XS.

I just tried something on my XS that I haven't done before. I realize that the XS only has one set of numbers in the digital mode verses the Explorer II which has two sets of numbers. Well, I first had it set in conductive and passed a silver half dollar by my coil. I got a reading of 28. I then switched it to ferrous mode and passed the half dollar by my coil again and I got the same reading of 28. The only thing I noticed between conductive and ferrous was a different tone. Am I missing something here or does it really matter if you are in conductive or ferrous mode when hunting for silver coins if in fact you will get the same numerical reading in either mode? Thanks for any input on this.

Eddie,

That is what it does as you set it for ferrous or conductive tones as the numbers or smart find stays the same. Now in ferrous as targets that read on the very right of the screen are high tones, so silver coins, pieces of tin cans and rusty bottle caps all read high tones.
Now your nails that read on top are on the left side so they will be low tones. On Conductive the very top is high tones and the bottom of the screen is low tones, so here is where your rusty nails will read high tones and confuse some and why many like to run ferrous tones. Now do you notice that silver coins read top right? so in either audio mode silver coins will read high tone. Ferrous all the way right high tone, conductivity top is high tones, just where silver coins read.

Eddie,

Not a whole lot of difference in tone with a silver or copper coin, they both hit upper right. With a chunk of iron there will be a big difference in sounds. In conductive high tone is at the top of the screen, low tone at the bottom. In Ferrous high tone is to the right and low tone to the left.

On the XS only the y - conductive axis cursor position is shown as a number, the XS II displays both the y- conductive and x- ferrous cursor position.

Both models will display the same numbers regardless of sound selected, but the tones for most targets are completely different.

Basically if you want to run open screen you HAVE to be in Ferrous. If you run any discrimination on the left side of the screen you can use either.

I have never owned an XS, only an ExII, but as I understood it the single numerical display always gives the conductivity figure, no matter what the sound setting was. The figure is totally independant of the sound setting.

You would always get the same figure on the display no matter what 'mode' you are in when passing over the same object. The display is showing Conductivity. In fact calling it 'MODE' when refering to the the sound setting is probably misleading you
The detection mode of the detector is the same in either ferrous or conductivity. The machine measures both Conductivity and inductive (ferrous) on each target.
When you change between fer or Cond in sounds, all you are doing is telling the machine to produce a noise based on one value or the other.
In Fer you will get a sound based on the ferrous value which is not diaplayed, but the Digital dispaly will still display the Cond value.
In Cond you will get sound based on the conductivity value, and this figure will also be displayed in the Digital diaplay.

I am sure I have this right.....but am waiting for the barrage telling me I am wrong
