I am accustomed to digital readout on my old xlt. Does this hinder the performance of the explore if I chose that mode of viewing?

It's not the best mode but you can use it and switch back & forth from the smart screen which will give you more information.

I use it alot. It has no effect on depth. The only drawback is it's not quite as precise. All the targets get divided into 32 numbers so it tends to lump things together. All the higher coin hits both silver and copper are going to be from 26 up nickels will hit around 5 and if its 7 its a pulltab. Ulike your xlt the tones will tell you more than the meter will and the meter is only numbers and it won't show you denomination like the xlt.
Work with both screens the smart screen is called that for a reason and you'll find most users stay there most of the time.

What's the quickest way to switch back from the digital mode to the smart screen mode...it seems I only go to digital to check on nickels and then I have to hit the detect button 3 more times to get back to the smart screen mode. Does your detector allow you to hit the back button to go back to the smart screen?

That's the only way I know to get back. Push the detect button.

is to press the menu button ,then choose the display menu, the one with four choices, two of which are digital and smartscreen.
Select one ,when you require the other ,press the back button, then select the other option you require. When you want the previous option, repeat this action. This saves one press of a button each time you change.Over a day ,this could equate to 50-100 less button presses.ALso ,in bright sunlight, selecting a display setting of 4 makes it easier to read the display.

Slow's you down.
use this order.
1. Tone (recognition)
2. smart screen for (verification of tone)
and depth reading.
simple and can't beat it. Listen for familiar tone. THEN look at smartfind screen. Otherwise you'll be staring at the screen and covering as much ground as a snail. especially in high trash area's.

I have used digital almost exclusively for the past year. I'm hunting in 1830's to 1870's sites so there aren't many aluminum cans, foil, or pull tabs to worry about. I use ferrous tones, and any high tone will be copper, brass, silver, lead, or gold. I decide whether to dig based on the sound, but then take a quick look to get an idea of what I might be digging. 5 is a nickle. 7 - 18 good chance of a button, but may be lead. 25 or 26 likely an indian head or a minie ball, or a thick copper item. 28 usually silver or thick brass or copper item. Works great for me! Regards! Ed
