Digital Camera advice

I've been considering the purchase of a digital camera and am getting kind of overwhelmed with it all, but basically I want to get the best package I can in about the $400.00 range.
I've found a few possibilities in the 3.2-4 megapixel range in that price, and have about three different ones that I'm leaning toward, but I still have pros and cons about them all. For example:
I like the idea behind the Sony MVC-CD line in that the small CDs can store a lot of photos and are relatively cheap as opposed to the large capacity memory sticks. In that category I am leaning toward the MVC-CD350, but it is only a 3.2 megapixel machine , whereas others in that same price range are 4-5 megapixels.
The Nikon line and Olympus line have some good possibilities, but both cameras only come with a 16 mb memory stick, which necessitates the purchase of a higher capacity stick, and that's the same as boosting the price of the camera another 80-100 dollars. Plus extra rechargeable batteries. There's some more dollars, which makes me think I might as well go with the type which takes the CD's instead of memory sticks. Oh well....
So there I am: stuck with a lot of indecision, so hopefully you guys can help me make up my feeble mind.

Ya gonna be hard pressed to get what ya want new in that price range. I'd hold off until I had $500-600. Whatever ya buy ya still gonna want some more goodies to go w/it. I answered your post in the views forum. Follow this link it'll give ya the skinny on most cams since around 98. Ya might consider a used cam. Good Luck

necessary is a macro mode and the ability to focus down close so's you can take pics of your finds. I recently got a Nikon Coolpix 995 on EBay for $395 i believe. With a 64 meg memory stick I can take something like 175 pics. It will focus down to almost nothing and distance pics are very good. I like it! Consider a factory refurbished unit and you can get a $1000 camera for $400.
