digisearch meter

I am new to the gt. I just bought one used and am finding stuff all over the beach where my beginner white's was never seeing anything. I love it. It came with the Digisearch meter. I have read a number of posts about setting the meter and reading the number but I am a little confused about how to calibrate. I read in the manual to use a quarter and set it to 170. Is there a better way to get this accomplished or does anyone have any tips about starting out with this meter?

Do as the manual says, It's extremely easy, Wave the coil over the quarter & adjust the knob on the back of the meter to set it at 170 all the time while slowly waving the coil over the quarter. It really is that simple. Because you can bump/knock it, Just recalibrate it ever now and again or if you think it's a bit off. You will get used to the tone each item makes and will know when the meter needs a touch recalibrating.

Sandfisher,If its a 180 meter set 180 for a US Quarter. The Digisearch meter could be a 550 meter, and if so set a US Quarter at 550.There are charts for these meters in past posts.Good Luck with your Sovereign.

180 is what everybody sets them at for the most part. Ignore the "170" in the manual. I find if I use a clad dime to adjust it to 181 and then just lower it just enough to hit 180 then a silver dime (maybe not in the air but in the ground) will probably bump into 181 here and there but probably still mostly read 180. A clad quarter, silver quarter, large cent, half or silver dollar I bet will also at least bump into 181 as they are even more conductive.

Thanks for the replies, I am enjoying getting used to this machine. How would I know if it is 180 or 550? It came with the machine when I bought it used and there is no paperwork for it. It has a blue face and says Digisearch on it. When it is set for 170, iron shows up at about -489. Are the numbers all relative anyway? If I know what they are and what stuff rings up on does it matter?

Sandfisher,A quick way set a US Quarter for 550.If you can dial the meter to 550 its a 550.With a minus 489 most likely a 550. Again Good Luck Ron

The Digisearch meter are the 180 meters even though it says in the book to set for 170 it is easier to set it for the 180 numbers as we all use these and when comparing numbers of certain coins you will know what we are talking about.
The earlier meters didnt say Digisearch on them, said Sovereign and those are the 550 meters many have done rescaling of them to 180..

Hello all!
I am new to this forum. I bought a GT last autumn and recently got a 550 meter and is wondering if anyone know how to rescale the 550 to 180? I am a novice when it comes to the GT and it seems that im gonna stay a novice until this looong winter releases it hold. This forum has helped me alot!

Search the mods forum or this forum as I think I saw threads on doing that. Also try goggle because I know there are threads out there on doing it. Very simple from what I've seen.

I have the parts to do this as it needs a couple of resistors changed and the main Potentiometer changes and readjust the main calibration control in the meter itself. A person has to pull off the decal to get at the screws to take it apart, but in most cases the decal wont stick down as good as it use to. I just cut out the small area where the screws are to get at them. There was the instruction on Ken Wildherre site, but the site is gone, but I believe I still have a copy printed out.
It will take some soldering as everything is soldered in so if you don't know how or not comfortable with doing this it would be better to let someone else do it.

I have done alot of soldering in the past so it shouldnt be a problem. the problem is to find instructions on how to do it.

I've seen them out there, either in this or the mods forum, or by doing a google search. Can't remember which.

There is a link to the site that Ken Wildherre has, but dont think I can post the link on here, so give me a PM with your E Mail address and I can send you the link. It is just the pictures of what has to be changed and the color of the resistors. I have the parts here if you need them as I ordered in about 10 of the sets.
