Digging tools?

I was wondering what everyone else uses? I myself use the Lesche. I thought about trying out the Raptor because it looks like it may be a little easier to use but I hunt a lot of private yards and I think the smaller the tool the better. Not that other diggers do any damage but the perception of the homeowner is what really counts in getting permission. If they see something that looks like a small shovel a lot of them will not give permission.

I have used a lesche for years, but switched to a Raptor this past fall. I like it better and it seems to handle the tough stuff really well. For farm fields I use a Predator Tools Mauler since neatness is not an issue. Still fill in the holes though. :)

Been using the same lesche now for over 5 yrs and it is worn down over 1.5 inches compared to a new one!! Very reliable and TOUGH!

ive used an old knife my Dad had when we first started back in the 80's. this thing is huge, it has a nice antler handle, and about a 9.5" blade. Its worn down so smoothly that its far more dull than a butter knife. even though its useless to cut anything, its still kinda scary looking so i am very discreet when i use it. but its perfect for cutting nice neat plugs.

I guess I'm the only guy to have some negative Lesche/ Predator tools feedback here. About 4 months ago I broke my old trusty homemade shovel and thought I would "step up" to a good shovel,

so I bought the #58 Little Eagle shovel. I used it during two outings detecting and tried to like it but ended up building me a replacement to match my old one and never looked back (at it sitting in

the closet). I'm not bashing the Lesche, it IS for sure a top quality tool in every aspect except my satisfaction. I guess I could carry in my truck as a utility shovel in case I get stuck? In closing this

post, I'm not trolling for hatred but just saying there are other options out there and you could like it better?

I'm sure their are tools other than the Lesche that will do the job just as good or better. Maybe its just me but when I ask someone for permission to hunt their yard, I think they are more likely to grant it if I'm carrying something that looks like a knife instead of something that looks like a shovel or trowel.

When I ask permission I carry nothing to the door. I also say " Would it be ok if I scan your yard with my detector?" If asked I never say the word "dig" or "hole". It's "recover" and "pop". Then if I get permission I will always put my back to the house when recovering my targets. This way they see no digging or dirt. Then once you get back up all they see is grass.

I always put my back to other boats when I am recovering a fish too...haha!

A Lesche came with the E-Trac package, and it works fine for the rare occassion that i use it. Since farm fields and old rural home sites are what i primarily hunt a small shovel is it. I keep one side edge of the shovel sharpened like a knife to chop down small brush.

EXCELLENT ADVICE!!!! I have always done this as well and try to tell my friends the same thing

Thanks Terry. If they want to stare at my Butt then let them. :crylol: They don't need to see anything that looks like digging. :detecting:

You don't think it looks kind of suspicious ,like you are trying to hide something? lol

The way I do it is work around every target until my back is to the house then go to work. Lots of these people are watching you through their favorite spying holes.

i also always dig with my back to roads. dont need a car driving by with my knife out, just in case. some people are nosy and think theyre the local society police. i know this isnt digging advice and i hope everone here doesnt think this is too shady but i always seperate my finds into three different areas, one for trash, one for silver, and one for other coins. if anyone suprises me and wants to see what ive found i always show them the dirty coins and the trash but never the silver. now this is not something i would do to a friend/coworker/aquaintance or to someone who i promise to share finds with. im speaking about the general public. most people are very nice about it and walk away thing im nuts for digging up trash and some old dirty coins, but thats what i want. always show them the trash! i always think to myself if i found it, its mine, whether its junk or not. sorry for rambling on. ive got cabin fever.
