Digging thru Blacktop

I was wondering if anyone has ever had to dig through an old blacktop layer to reach a coin(s)? I detected at the site of an abandoned bar / restaurant today. Due to weeds & piles of worthless junk everywhere, I could not find the actual location of the bar. Adjoining a 2 lane highway, was a stretch of blacktop that was obviously used as the entryway. Aside from finding modern coins in the gravel layer of the blacktop, I was getting some great signals, mainly 28's, 34's & 38's. Has anyone had success pciking thru old blacktop? Could the coins be mixed in with the blacktop, because the depth was showing at around 3"? This blacktop was around 3" thick. I did unearth an old screw-top, mixed in with the blacktop that signalled a 37. If I go back, I'm bringing a misery bar. I was using Sabich's guidelines for coin mode. IMO,it works great. Any info would be appreciated.
