Digging through roots

hatpin

New member
Ive been searching in heavily wooded areas and have broken my old garden spade. So im in the search for a digging implement. I want light , strong and a long enough handle so my back doesnt hurt. What do you fellows use for digging around tough roots?

Im in the wrong forum, sorry.

I own one of the long handel spades, the Lesche Sampson T-Handle Shovel

Here's a link..

Take a look at the Raven. It's 41" long and has a 7" wide step. All steel and teeth on both sides. Has a "T" handel (good for tamping the soil). Can't use it on lawns though, it's a little sloppy when you pull it out of the ground.

Lesche Sampson with serrated edge ...

Hi Hatpin, I have never been able to stand and dig because of my back(surgery), so always have to be on my knees. I have been using the same shovel for over 40 years and it works for me. It started out as a broken, wooden handled sharpshooter that I sawed off below the brake. Also sawed (rounded) corner tops of blade. I "duct" taped a piece of foam over the end to soften for handeling, sharpened the end and down both edges, and what roots it won't cut through I go under. It is light enough to be used as a machette for cutting a path. I holed the handle and put through a rope loop for slinging it over my shoulder. All the years of sharpening and it now has a 13" handle,11 1/4" blade, tapered from 5 1/4" top to 4" wide at bottom. Long as I keep it sharp it gets the job done for me.and I could probably give a grizzle bear a good round with it! LOL, Well, maybe not a grizzle bear, but you get the idea. HH, Charlie

kinda off topic but it makes me think of a copper penny signal i get at a location in my home town under a big root it is in a location were i dont dare dig a big hole under or chop the large root.
some day i will!

Hi 798, I have a 10"surgical hemostat"roachclip" that I found (honestly)that some pot heads dumped in the ditch in front of my house years ago when I suppose the cops were chasing them. It is 9'' long and I have considered using it for any "precision" digs I may encounter, but so far have not needed it.. You can buy the things on line and I just thought I would mention it to you. They should work and would allow you to surgically remove that good signal from that big root without a big hole! Plenty of folks have learned to dig parks with nothing but a long screwdriver, so you could maybe use the two together.HH, Charlie

the roots a big s.o.b with a smaller web of them all around it big pine i have attempted twice but get worried if it was silver i would just did what i had to do but you know the signal that haunts you

If it's not considered a "sacrilege" you could get an additional Lesch Tool and remove the red handle, then weld an identical piece of "pipe" to it the length you need. If you saved the red handle stick it back on or use a bicycle grip. There was a post recently where someone recommended going to padded bike grips to improve on the red handle. When my handle goes out I'll use a bike grip also.

I took a Swiss Army Knife today. A One Handed Treker that has a saw blade. Used it several times to cut through roots. It was real handy and will be part of my m.d. gear. Also took a little Scotts garden spade. Ill have to get something better. I think a "drain spades" would work well.

Great shovel!

I use mine on turf, but only when I'm hunting private property with permission. I've found that the rounded back on the Raven is perfect for making circular plugs and actually does less damage to the turf. This past fall I did a little experiment where I dug some holes with the Raven and others with my Lesche (The hand/balde type). The grass plugs that wer dug with the Raven grew back much better that the folded over plugs that I had dug by hand. :)

Lesche Sampson with serrated edge is what I use.

This baby will cut throught roots, or just about anything. Harbor Freight under $10

If it's in the sheath .......... you will be arrested..should the police, or Park Rangers be around...........

That sawback knife wont cut through wood effectively. The teeth are not offset. The swiss army knife has a real wood saw.

Don't suggest anybody break the law, but here this is nothing more than a hunting knif. Check out the offset on the teeth, it is not finish cut, as you can see it is very aggresive.

Those teeth are staggered. I stand corrected. I have an airforce pilots knife with the sawback and it wont cut though wood.

hatpin,
You may find this one a little more to your liking, I admit that big knife is a little over the top, but one of my brothers uses one and likes it I bought one and used it a few times but went back to old tools. I now carry this little folding job and it does just about everything I ask it to do. I wish I could tell everybody where to get one, but my deer hunting buddy got it for me. Here is what is on the blade in case anybody wants to try and find one. Unite Rostfri, UC858, and it says Italy, I assume that is where it is made.

Good luck with those roots,

Ron in WV

both at the same time. I have been harrassed by the police a few times. LOL BUT, IF the police arrest me for them, it will be FALSE arrest. What you are carrying is a TOOL not a weapon. If you call it a DIGGING TOOL, and its part of your equipment it is NOT a weapon. Double edged knives are illegal here. But they are both lifesaving tools.

You are a professional detectorist and professionals have to have tools. They can't touch you.

If your carrying it around without a detector and acting big and bad, I am sure they can have a case then!!
