Digging techniques

vfrf2

New member
I would like to metal detect at places like parks, playrounds, ball fields etc. where there may be some finds. Where I live here in VA, most local jurisdictions frown upon this practice. My guess is, this is due to damage caused by holes left from digging. Would anyone happen to have a technique or tool they used that would do minimal damage...to grassy areas especially? I've seen "probe" techniques mentioned using something small like a screw drive to probe the possible find, then use the screw driver to pull it out somehow. Anyway...something to pass along to a newbie like myself would be appreciated.

Thanks!

In areas like that i like to use the cut a flap method, seem to be much neater in groomed grassy areas, and pile all my dirt on a rag, so i can get it all back in the hole before i fold the flap back down and step on it, I like it real well :detecting::fisher::usmc::usaflag:

Here is a site with the information you are lookin for. The technique That Bugar uses works really well and does no damge to the grassy areas.

The method I use is in a whites manual, I forget which one but its really good for grass. You use a small hand shovel or, this digging tool that is kinda like a small spear, cut a half moon shape out of the grass, fold the grass flap back and dig, then simply fill in the hole and fold the flap back and tap it down with your foot, just like buger had posted.
