Digging nickels is hard work!!

So I created a custom nickle/gold program for my Explorer Se and went back over an area I have been working on for a few trips. I have pulled many clad quarters, dimes and pennies but only 1 nickle so I thought I would give it a try. My second target was a little gold colored ring which turned out to be palladium. Here is some pics of my 3 nickels, 1 ring and the other goods  Still had a good time though!!

Your extra effort paid off............................a really nice ring...............................................................John

VERY FEW nickels this year:thumbdown:....BUT then again I didn't try for them very often either...so it's my own fault AND choice.

I would rather spend my hunt time concentrating on deep silver and injun' hits.

Agreed....VERY hard work.:stars:

Funny thing was when I dug all those lower conductor hits last Saturday...then got lucky hitting the gold and diamond cross....you can see the pile of crap I dug....BUT NOT A SINGLE NICKEL TURNED UP!

For me though...it can be a nice change of pace when there just doesn't seem to be anyu higher conductor hits to work with....and you just never know what's going to turn up. Most of the time for me it's just a big pile of crap in my pouch:crylol:....but sometimes you get lucky:thumbup:

That is a SWEET ring you found:thumbup:...VERY NICE HUNT!

Very nice ring - I didn't know they made them out of palladium. Palladium is considered a precious metal, I think. Does it have a mark for palladium? Congrats. I also concentrate on high conductors, Yesterday I tried digging a few low conductors which had a "round" sound but only found can slaw. I'd rather cover more ground by digging the silver signals only. I hunt in parks which are full of screw caps and can slaw.

At $633 an ounce..... id say the work was worth it. I know a lot of people hunt for nickels.... surely hoping for gold because few nickels are worth much..... but better than 90 percent of the gold i find dont hit exactly like a nickel. 80 percent of all the jewelry is small womens rings and they hit very low like 10-06 to 11-02. So make sure you include those in your pattern.

The ring is marked PD which I looked up and is the marking for Palladium. I usually never dig for nickels either but thought I would give it a try and see what I was missing so I set the program for all the different type nickles I had on hand and the gold items I had. They all hit right around the same area so I figured I might get lucky on some older nickles or gold. The ring was bouncing from 08-08 to 09-09 but the nickles were all over the place. It won't be something I do everyday cuz I like the sweet sound of that silver to much but it was interesting to see what I had walked over 3 times!! happy Hunting guys and thanks for the comments

The only problem ive found is air testing give a true value without averaged targets or minerals. The machine also has a salt setting that my affect how gold will hit. Patterns can be a great way to cover a large area and id a specific target if done properly. Most people dont want to pass up clad and possible old copper or silver so they leave them in. A good gold pattern for me wouldnt include those targets.... to much time wasted on targets you arent looking for. Gold and some other precious metals as you have proven fall at a lower range and at over $1700 an ounce its worth not picking up pennies for one ring.

I am just getting started with my detector and it's a lot different from my Whites. I am going to work on the nickle sounds too.

Wow, only 10 nickles in a year. I gues if you are excluding them with your patterns you wont find many. I always include gold and nickles in my patterns, (etrac) but found twenty one nickles total after my first 3 times out with the new etrac. I went out yesterday looking for gold at a home site that had burned down 60 years ago, and found 20 nickles, one token and 6 quarters in two hours. But No one else had done much detecting there before because of all the nails. It is just off the side of a churchyard so it gets a lot of use but I could see nails on top of the ground while I was detecting and there were nails in every hole. All the nickles were nice and rust red colored. Idigid

a choice many of us make to better concentrate on silver coins and Injuns'.

My hunt time is very valuable to me and I'd much rather spend it checking out a silver coin hit as I would chasing a nickel hit which has about 50+ other things it could be other than a nickel.

A silver hit...thats a different story.

My lack of nickel finds is because of a personal decision I have made.

If I'm in an area where ancient coins are coming from or gold jewelry is more likely to be coming from...sure I'll chase a few lower hits.

LOl..I don't mind digging a few pull tabs but dang it was like a 5-1 ration on pulltabs vs. nickels!! But the little ring was nice. I will work on it at spots I have hunted alot on and already dug all the silver I can find :twodetecting:
