Digging in the woods???

Any tips on detecting in the woods?? There are 3 inches of leaves so wondering if I can really expect much as for as a signal goes?? I'm using a Garrett GTAx 1000.. (Shortly upgrading to the AT Pro) Any help or tips on settings would be very much appreciated.. I have over 20 acres ready to hit.. These woods are the closest woods to an old stage line that was about a 1/2 mile away to the west.. Sam Bass robbed a stage less than a mile from here, felt bad and gave each passenger back a dollar so they could buy breakfast when they got to the next town.. No stories of hidden loot but is an excellent spot to watch the old stage road from.. The Indians left quite a lot yrs earlier, I suspect for the same reason.. The view of the prairie below...Everything to the west is prairie and this being on a heavily wooded ridge that overlooks the prairie to the west.. Have found broken cast iron cooking pots and broken whiskey jugs scattered here and there on the surface.. So my thinking is this was a prime camping area..Thanks, I'm a new member here....

welcome sonnydigs. sounds like you may have an interesting area to hunt. hope you can post some pics. best of luck to you:detecting:

Thanks, just concerned about the leaves....Other than that we have cleared all the briars, and under brush by hand over the yrs.. Like a park area would look..

[size=large]it does look like you have some good prospects. some of your post reminded me of todays pioneers still leaving trash and broken parts laying around. this time supposedly on the moon and mars. some things never change.

LOL, so true.. I guess I really never thought about it till you mentioned it.. Good point.. It does give us leads though.. I guess in the distant future they will look for areas with pull tabs as clues, lol.. Thanks for the reply..

So there is no one with any tips as to my question??

I thought there would be some answers as to whether it will get good signals through the leaves or is it a deal where you would need to rake an area, anyone??

[size=large]i have yet to hear of any hardship on hunting over leaves. see no reason to be a bother. happy hunting.

Thanks guys for your reply.. Would love to get out today but at 39F and 25 MPH winds with wind chill at 18 I will just read about what you guys are finding.. Been watching videos made about AT Pro finds just make me more convinced that is the one I want.. Every so often I see a video complaining about the depth or what not.. Seems the consensus is overwhelming positive feed back the Pro.. Anyone here have any complaints on it?? thanks for all the feed back..

Sounds like you might have a good chance of finding interesting relics and maybe an old bottle dump (with the metal discards). Good luck!

Thanks Hot Rod.. I hope to find something..

Here is an article that might help encourage you to "do it" in the woods if you can read it before the  post deleter arrives.

The only tip I can give you is is if your starting to get a lot of high VDI #'s on the leaves, say in the mid 80's, and its not falsing, you've probably found yourself an Acer saccharinum...or a Betula pendula:thumbup:

LOL, thanks QH,
At this point I'm ready to find anything with some age on it.. The good thing is there shouldn't be a lot of recent trash like pull tabs.. Thanks for the link, I'll go copy it before it disappears, lol--

Thanks again QH, I found that info very inspiring.. With a little luck maybe I will find some stuff in them there woods..:))

Hi Sonnydigs, and welcome to this great Forum, I detect in the Woods here in the U K.

If you concentrate on searching any paths that run through the Woods these are very

productive for good finds, I have no problem with the blanket of leaves, but the ground

and soil under the leaves is usually very acid and can play havoc with copper coins.

Silver will take on a black patina but will clean up O K, I use the A T Pro in Pro Custom

Mode, Iron Disc 30, Sense 7 Bars,Iron Audio On. Camp Sites are great to search, just

take it nice and slow and listen for those sweet tones.

Good Luck and H H

Thanks Les,
We own this property so there really aren't any trails.. Other than ones we have made over the yrs.. Woods are more like a park setting, only trees no under brush.. Just good clean area to search.. I do know where I have found the broken cast iron cooking pot and whiskey jug.. so I will start around that area.. looks like there may have been a spring there at one time... What I'm hoping for anyway.. Thanks for the tips..

Man those three things equal one thing here where I grew up.................old moonshine still........I know where 3 were busted up in the 50's judging by the broken canning jars, but I have never :detecting: around them YET. I know I can find the barrel hoops......... maybe one of the revenuers dropped a dime:thumbup:

Anybody traveling in arid county would have made it a point to camp at that spring if they knew it existed, might be a real good starting point and expand your search outwards from there.

Les is a pretty, very good "woodsmen" that hunts in Sherwood Forest Park next to a "stream", he's found lots of Robin's treasures and it would behoove Sonny to follow his digs.

Thanks QH,
The reason I mention the spring is there is one located on the USGS Topo map, it's on the next property over.. (oh, I can detect it to) I think this spring I think that was here was long gone before there were any maps to record it on..
Thanks for the reply.. Waiting on the wind and cold air to move out and back to the woods I go.. I will follow your tips though.. Thanks again for that tid bit..

PS: Last 12 yrs before retiring I worked in Archaeology, I have recorded old still sites in the past.. They are cool..
