Digging in the Roots

Waterdog

Well-known member
Metal detected around an older House today. Dug several targets with a few deep wheaties, and some clad dimes. Digging around in the roots for a while kind of wore me out. Looking for another workout in the roots another day, I just know there is more than pennies and clad. Going to bring a saw with me next time.

I pack a folding swiss army knife with a saw on it in my finds pouch....comes in real handy!

Try an army surplus store or a sport store and purchace a "wire or branch saw". Comes with metal hoops on each end. Dig underneath the root and slip the wire saw underneath and away you go. For thinner branching roots I use a top grade pruner.

I have a silky saw 130 but forgot to bring it with me. It works great on big roots. A real good thing to have in your backpack.

in a known "rooty" area I always make sure to bring some pliers....snip-snip-snip.....makes it so much easier.

I don't use a fancy digger. I use a flower potting hand shovel. It has a blade on one side for cutting turf and grass roots, a saw blade on the other for cutting roots, rounded tip so I don't damage the target, measure increments etched in so I can see how deep it is, tamping end at handle for replacing the dirt and plug, and while I have broken one in 3 years it was only like 15 bucks at home depo

Oh I always keep two on hand incase I do break it lol nothing sucks worse then being out and not being able to dig a target

I always keep my digging tool's blade razor sharp including the saw teeth on the sides of the blade. No need for anyting extra as this usually does the job.
