Digging in strange parts

Furious T

Active member
I live in an area which has a population of about 40,000 people, and do most of my detecting in that area. I almost always remove any junk or rubbish that I dig, although some others who detect in the area are not so diligent.

When I do detect in other parts of our country, I constantly find junk which has been detected before (tell-tale signs), but left there by the other detectorist(s).

My question is: Should we remove such junk (thereby making it easier for the locals) or leave it there for them as they did for me (and each other). At present I usually remove such rubbish (same as I do at home), but I was just wondering what others do, and think is best. The pros of removing it is that I might find something good next to where it was (which happens), but I get to feel that I am cleaning up someone else's rubbish (as it could be argued that right of ownership of the junk has passed to the original finder:laugh:).

Just wondering what others think (and do).

Thanks

I clean the rubbish up because it is the right thing to do........ and yes, I do find some some good stuff too.

Not only do we (my wife & I) pick up the junk (if it isn't too large) but we spend a LOT of time straightening up the "dig holes" of some SLOBS when necessary.-----Seems like sometimes we spend half our hunt time doing this.-----We've found targets in their holes that they couldn't find--even found their diggers a few times that they threw down & walked off.------Jerks like these really concern me---make me so mad I could "chew nails" actually!-----If we don't ALL do our part in this hobby (proper recovery techniques)---we aren't going to have a hobby---plain & simple.----------Del

i agree!..been doin' it 30 years, and still encounter this s**t!..unbelievable how apathetic people can be!
is it any wonder ya get 'tossed" a lot!..if others refuse to do the "right" thing, the hobby WILL croak!
piss off a ton of people, and cost many in the industry the ability to put food on the table!..just sayin!

The war nickel I found last year has made me a believer in taking out "others" trash. I found it a bit below a pulltab that someone had obviously dug fairly recently. I don't mind taking the trash out when I find it. I also find myself picking up surface trash from time to time. I just keep a trash bag with me so when looky loos want to see my "finds" I can show them (the goodies are usually in a jacket pocket or pouch). Its not that hard to take out dug trash, pick up surface trash, cover your holes properly and present the public with a positive image of detectorists.:detecting: and heck picking up trash has even got me an invite to some private property to do a little detecting, so for me its been win/win.

That's a really good testimony LuckyDig, thanks for shareing.---Hope a lot of people read it!----The biggest problem we have here is that the ones that need to read posts like these THE MOST never see them.----I sincerely hope this great hobby survives into the next genereation.----SOMETIMES I wonder how it's survived as long as it has.----I'm not trying to sound negative but I just think of how many good hunt sites have been closed since the 1970's---it's sad.-----And the reason for MOST of the closures has resulted because of the effects of the "nuts" like is being discussed here (and their irresponsible actions).-----What's a person to do?----Maybe we ought to start a campaign to get some of these characters in here on this great forum---to actually learn something about metal detecting AND RECOVERY.----------Del

I pick up all trash that I dig and all surface junk I find. Junk that I choose not to dig, of course, stays right where it is.

I haul off all trash I dig and often times, surface trash that is on and around my hunting path. One time on an old Fairgrounds in Ga I spotted several beer cans that had been tossed or left, nearby where I was hunting. When I was done hunting, I got my trash bag out of my car and went over and picked up the beer cans....along with the two fifty dollar bills that were also laying there. SO, IT REALLY DOES PAY TO HAUL OFF ALL TRASH! HH jim tn

I always check any old holes that I find. If it is a real mess, more often than not the target is still there. I also try to leave things in better shape than it was before I got there.

I too have filled holes left by other inconsiderate detectorists and always carry a small trash bag on my belt for any trash dug while detecting, Will also carry out any surface trash if I have room for it. If the slobs in our hobby don't soon start cleaning up their acts, none of us are going to have a place to go detecting at...

Thanks for the replies, All. I would respond individually, but all replies have been along the same lines, and so we are all of one mind on this...It's not a small part of the hobby to know that, as well as finding good stuff for ourselves, and possibly the person who lost it, we are also doing our bit for our parks and such, and the environment (does that make us a bunch of Greenies:lol:). We also share a dislike for those who dont do their bit in keeping the hobby going, and helping to give us all a good name. The little litter bag seems to be a popular item (I carry about 3 with me at a time) and a bag or cloth to put loose dirt on is also handy.

Thanks for your responses...I appreciate it because it's easy to get the feeling that I'm the only one out there who does these things. HH

Furious-------YOU ARE NOT ALONE!!!!! YAH HA HA HA-------Can't be ALL serious, gotta get a little humor in here to!----At least I think this "one liner" is (sorta) humorous! :crylol: :)

Thanks Del, Now I'll have to get therapy before I can hunt at night again:rofl: I hope you aren't frozen in at present, or if you are, then you can get out and about soon.

Hey Furious-----I'm alive & well, warm & hunting (and picking up trash) almost every day----I'M IN N.M. (& AZ)!!-----Ain't huntin at night tho--no sir!----Not after what we've been talkin!

Great thread and advice! It is a shame this subject even has to come up. Seem's all the bases have been covered. Ask yourself would you let yourself dig in your own yard when you leave your next digging site?:goodnight:

Im one that also try to DO THE RIGHT THING. Picking up trash is just a part of it. To be honest MOST of us do very little damage and try to do our part to clean up trash. Its a shame people wants to take these kind of posts and paraphrase them to close our parks. I have a few suggestions.... if you dig it all, move around, use a cloth, dont only ensure your plug is put back properly, but brush the area with your hand, dont use OVERKILL tools in a park or anything that might draw attention to you. Be careful of what you post.... be it finds or criticism.

I pick up the trash not only because it is the right thing to do but because I do not want to find it next time I hunt that area.
