Silver Barber dime, gold plated ring, brass pieces, really unusual minie ball with embedded nail. Thanks for watching.

Nice Hunt! I'm just gonna take a wild guess and try to think why a person would embed a little piece of iron in the base of a bullet. Lets say a fellow needed an awl to repair a strap or somesuch, on the fly and in a hurry, a bullet would be a readily available handle to hold a piece of scrap both to sharpen it easily, and to comfortably use it to push holes in leather. I could see a guy heating a common staple, nail or wire, pushing it into a bullet, peening it down to hold it tightly, and sharpening the end on a stone for a quick leather strap fix of an evening...it would be interesting to see if what is inside the lead was preserved enough to ID the iron...if its a nail head, then an awl would make sense, I made one using a 8d nail back when I was a kid and still have it to this day. I wrapped the head of the nail with scrap deerskin to form a little knot, and sharpened a nice taper on the other. Truly something to think about, hopefully somebody on the forum will know for sure. nice recovery, CCH...:clapping:

1899 was a good year too. LOL

Mud,
Thanks for your thoughtful comments. Could have been used for anything to include an awl, a field pen, a cleaning tool, an extraction tool, a carving piece etc. Thats what is so wonderful about this hobby ... history !

Elton - I found a couple of 1899 dated silver coins recently .... must have been a good year. ????

Thanks again to both of you. CCH

Great finds.

My first thought on the bullet and nail was a fishing sinker. I have had to get creative a time or two to keep on fishing after my last sinker was lost ;)

Next thought was a pedelum used for construction to hold a line straight. But of course it could be anything, necessity is the mother of all innovation.

Thanks Lakota. Both are possibilities. I definitely thought of a fishing sinker. Take care. cch
