Digger tool

Shovels understandably are frowned upon in parks and yards. Lesche diggers seem to be accepted. Due to physical impairment I have a hard time digging with my lesche. If I add a handle to make it longer and add a footpad to push it in the ground ie. making it more like a short narrow shovel what are your opinions on this. I also have a Sampson shovel which really is nothing more than a double wide lesche, which do you think would cause a less negative perception. I can dig with the sampson and refill the hole and you can't tell it was ever disturbed but mainly want feedback on which would cause less negative perception.

The little sampson is an awesome digger - I used one for years. It does cut a clean hole, but can look a bit intimidating to others. I wear mine on a belt in a hammer holster. This holds it close to you and kinda hides it. Done correctly, I think the Sampson should be OK. I would not walk around with it in my hand, put it on a hammer holster. JMHO. HH.

Move on to another spot. Given the chance explain to the authorities your limitations.Demonstrate your abilities with the longer handled diggers.

I have the 31" Sampson with serrated edge. It does cut a much nicer plug than the Lesche hand digger in my opinion. And when I carry it I hold it down by the blade and tuck the rest behind my arm and under my armpit. I still won't take it to a park, but I can get by with the handheld Lesche there anyways.

If its just the length of the handle on the Samson that concerns you.... why modify the leshe .... modify the handle on the Samson. Those with disabilities tend to adapt by using lighter equipment or modifying what they have. Rarely is it the popo that hassle you as much as a person who stops and lets their dog crap without picking it up. Neatness is FAR more important to me when i see someone digging. Ive seen people with quality tools leave spots like they used a backhoe.

I made this digger about 12 years ago.I've dug many thousands of holes and it has stood up well. The metal part is from a Lowes trowel and the handle is from a walmart trowel.Overall length is 12"+.I have a disability with my right hand but digging a target with this long handled trowel is no problem.

Always consider that first appearances do mean a lot. To the "unwashed" that don't know our hobby, those diggers with longer handles automatically become shovels to them. Unless they take enough interest to engage you in conversation, they will only see what they want to. A couple of times I have shown people what's in my trash bag as a result of detecting and they are startled. Bottle caps with sharp edges and rust nails found in the barkdust on tot lots "raise you to the level of a god" to many of these mothers concerned with their kid's safety. So perception has a lot to do with acceptance when it comes to these issues.

As to the pruning shears, if they make short handled ones with what's called "bypass" function on the jaws, they would be great. I have also seen recently at fairs some with a ratcheting function that ads power to your grasp.

Search on Amazon.com for "ratcheting pruning shears". They have a nice selection, with free two shipping for prime members!!! I just placed my order. I run into a lot of roots so I'll have these to speed up my recovery. Duh, don't know why I didn't think of using shears to cut thru the roots!!!!!!!!!
