Dig Wars

Do the stars of dig wars really care about our hobby and preserving history or is it all about the dollar? Over on treasure depot Larry kicked me off because I expressed my opinion about the show. sure I was a little hard on them but personally I thought the show was kind of childish. Now today I received an email from one of my hunting buddies with a not so good article from the New York Post. Here is the link. read for yourself.....Rick

http://www.nytimes.com/2013/08/03/opinion/open-season-on-history.html?smid=fb-share

i read the entire article and understand your point. what disturbs me is that archaeologists think that they are the only people who should be allowed to dig relics. if they had their way all metal detecting would be illegal.

Isn't it odd that The Wall Street Journal puts out a good article on mders earlier this week, and the NY Times comes back with an article that is not so good for mders? Strange how that works out, huh??? Sarcasm

Archie's look for many other artifacts not made of metal. We look for ferrous and non-ferrous when detecting. If we stumble across a bottle or a piece of pottery, that's just a bonus. My guess is they'd rather be working on older pits where ancient tribes lived, verses young Civil War areas. Europe, different story.

very interesting article.... of course it was on the opinion page....you know what they say about opinions,right.... if that property is as rich in history as writer claims then it would probably be best left archys..... but to equate all detectorists to indian pot thieves and grave robbers isn't very fair either.... funny how the author didn't mention anything about the 100 s of thousands of historical acres lost to development and urban sprawl every year-areas that would have no physical artifacts left to tell any kind of story ......... any time theres money involved your gonna have controversy ,,that's just the way it is......

Larry kicked you off? LOL join the club.

He's the reason I refuse to watch the show.

The same paranoia story all other the world, hobbyist bad profies good. Archies should make simple rules for MD hobbyist and stop trying to make world-ain reich ain fuhrer.

I watched the first and second shows. I'm sorry ;but i didn't like it. I hate saying so because i would love to watch a md show that's really about the way the hobby is. Every thing is not a competition, Most Md's don't run around like there crazy. Boom baby's show stinks all together, It's staged. Digger's is entertaining, but gets boring quick.dig wars follows suit. IT"S ALWAYS ABOUT THE MONEY!. Just my 2 cents.

"To be clear, I have nothing against nonprofessionals." This says it all about the character of the author IMO. ['It's not about the money' means IT'S ABOUT THE MONEY].

Not long ago, a news story ran about some cancer researchers (the best in their field) and their quest to find an answer to how a protein folded itself (or something like this) and that this was critical to their research. After spending years and millions on the search for the answer...they posed the question to a bunch of on-line gamers (students) and had their answer in a few days...

Just goes to demonstrate that a 'dedicated hobbyist' can be as much (or more) of an expert than the 'educated' professional in any particular scientific endeavor (i.e. archeology).

I absolutely do not support any of the detecting shows presently on TV .. they are only interested in their own personal gain. We are all expendable to them as long as they can line their pockets and detect site we can only dream of hunting. Another bad idea in the long history of bad ideas ..

the author of the nytimes story needs to get his facts straight and correct because people believe what they see in print. there are at least 2 hunts of this type put on each year by different people and they don't sell tickets to go to either one. there's a fee to help with the cost envolved to put on the hunt and its your decision if you want to participate or not. the story he mentioned about the people trespassing did not happen at all like he said and the only person that the owner could have filed charges against was his former employee that deceived everyone envolved.

The only way Larry Cissna's "relic dance" could be any g@yer would be if he was the grand marshal at a San Francisco pride parade sporting a--less chaps.

Jeff Harris

p.s. He'd do it too if the money were right.
