Dig that inconsistent beep?

OK here is one for you. Your detector beeps slightly. It reads penny or dime on the first pass. Then, no signal. you pass the coil over the spot repeatedly and nothing. Five times later when you are about to give up you get a slight beep and reads coin again. How do you handle this?

Anytime you're in doubt - DIG. The only accurate discriminator you have is your digging tool. Never depend soley on the display to determine whether you dig or not because they are not 100% accurate on any detector made.

Pull hair out? I know exactly what you mean.
I've had a few of those. Quite a few really...Some
I dig and find coins. Some I dig, and find nothing.
Sometimes I've dug reading a good pinpoint signal,
and still not find it. But...Still hear a good pinpoint
signal. One of those, I just gave up for now, as it was
wasting too much time, when I could be grabbing easier
coins... But I kind of keep track of some of those, and
plan to dig em on out one of these days just to know for
sure. I had a couple that would ring/pinpoint hot, but
vanish after digging for a while. I saw where Willy says
those are usually rust pockets that fall apart...
Anyway, I'm of the theory that if it rings in the same place
halfway consistant, there is probably "something" down there
deep. The only way to know for sure is to dig until you find
it, or it vanishes. I saw a guy the other day that went after
a "one ringer" and got a good old silver quarter or a half
out of it... :super: But you could also just have a deep rusty
nail that falls apart when you dig it. And those ring like
coins too half the time, cuz they are pretty conductive.
