dig everything detector users

When you say you dig everything, do you mean in all situations, or is this just in lower trash areas? In highly trashy areas, is it best to use the super sniper and discriminate or is it still better to dig everything?.....Coach

Just depends what you are looking for I suppose. And also what you are willing to risk
passing by. I dig most everything as I'm not picky as to what I find, and I'm not particularly
a coin shooter. I like relics as much or more than coins. Needless to say I dig a lot of
trash, but the way I look at it is, that's just one less piece of trash to run across again. :/
On the other hand, if you are looking for just coins, or rings, or whatever, digging
everything might slow things down a bit. And yes, I whip out the sniper in trashy areas.
Speeds things up even if I still dig everything.
Anyway, this topic is just something one has to decide for themselves depending on
what they are looking for.

I'm not an expert, but in my experience I have found that sometimes trash doesn't allow the detector to "see" a valuable target next to it, specially if its smaller than the trash target. So if I'm not decided to go just coin shooting I tend to dig up everything. That's the way I found my first gold ring (by the way has been the only one, he he) It sounded like trash. And besides I feel like I'm doing a social service cleaning parks. Well that's just me. Happy hunting my friend, good luck!

Do I dig everything? No. I rarely dig clear iron signals. I don't often dig foil indications, unless they hit "hard and large."
I refrain from digging indications that jump all over the scale, particularly if a large part of the jump is into the ferrous range.
But I do recover all targets that are over 3" deep and/or scatter in the mid to high range.

Like NM5K says, you should know what you are looking for. Are you after foil balls and screwtops? Do you want coins and jewelry?
Regardless, you need to know something about the target. In athletic fields were lots of tumbling, tossing and other physical activity takes place, it is wisest to dig nearly everything, since gold masquerades as trash. Ditto for the beach or other swimming/sunbathing areas. In these places sun, sweat water and suntan lotion conspire to loosen jewelry.

But there are other places where it makes little sense to flog the ground every time your detector beeps. At a middle school bus stop, for example, it is unlikely you will find many high dollar gold rings. There is a chance, of course, but the odds are slim. You can be more selective there.

In the end it is about knowing. Get to know your detector as well as you can and practice with it. Learn how it responds to the targets you seek - and those you don't want to find
Then, ask yourself what goes on at your hunt site. Picture in your mind what the people do there. This is what is referred to as site analysis and should happen before you even turn on your detector. Once you spend some time at this, you will figure out what you should be finding and where. Then compare this vision with the reality by recovering targets. After a while, you'll get to know a sites "target suite." Then you can approach some predictable results.

Today I hunted a hard hammered lake beach, a site that has been pounded for the last two weeks. You could see dig holes all over the place, from sloppy detectorists that had been there before me. But there were places they overlooked by passing up the middle and just hitting the waterline. But because I know how the site has been used in the past, I found stuff they missed. Any one of the items I dug could have been a gold ring, since they all hit in that range.

One final bit of advice - above all else, do not believe the hype. Trash and treasure so often mimic one another that you should take the advertising with a grain of salt. Remember, it is there to sell detectors.

I like to go by site or location. However, once I find a good trashy area that has a lot of good finds-it becomes one of my weekly locations and I start a digressing discrimination. After the notch finds , I then go to foil disc., then the next time iron disc. I just take my time so I won't be discouraged trying to remove the trash all at once. One school that I've done this often I now hunt in a/m mode.

there is one spot I have detected about 3 times now,, the first time a breezed over only taking the good targets i did very well, then a bit slower digging as many targets as I could, did qite well that time to,, then 3rd time in all metal and found just a few more coins, mostly the extra coins were masked by trash nails and beer bottle caps

This is how it evolves. As you work a site, you reduce the DISC more an more and recover more items. Sometimes to do that in the beginning means you never progress.

Low = Iron through low foil.
Mid = high foil through screwcap/zinc cent
High = Copper cent on up

Look at the ID graphics on the 1500. See the "Gold" and "Silver" segments overlaying the other target icons? Those pretty much mark the lines between the various ranges.
Try this: Cut long, thin strips electrical tape and lay them vertically on the display where each end of the "gold" range tapers off. That will serve as a helpful, visual marker to block out the ranges.

Great advise Dave.. Thanks. Its all sorta kinda starting to make
sense whcih scares me!!!!

Have a great evening
