I've been using a Explorer SE since last April and recently purchased a used Sovereign GT (thanks treasurechic). Of course I'm keeping the SE, but have always wanted to try the Sovereign.
What can I expect in differences coming from an Explorer? I have read the owners manual on the Sov a few times and it looks like a pretty simple machine but does have some unique differences when it comes to tones and discrimination. I run my Explorer in Iron Mask 26 so I'm used to hearing a lot of tones, but I take it the tones are of a totally different nature on the Sov. Do most experienced Sov users (like Explorer) users do away with discrimination to avoid nulling? With the Explorer, I got comfortable bypassing shallow copper/dime signals and focused on the deep signals. I run my gain at 9, which made me depend on the depth meter since I was always worried I wouldn't hear a deep signal. Am I right that with the Sov, you must use your hearing more as a tool to determine depth?
My initial setup on the Sov will be the stock 10" and meter. I plan to get a small coil and maybe WOT or Sunray 12", along with the customary Sunray probe. What is the best method for mounting the meter? The straight rod doesn't offer very good positioning for the meter that I've noticed. Maybe go with one of those slick aftermarket rods and mount the meter on the handle?
Anyway, just wanted to hear any advice from other Explorer/Sovereign owners. Thanks.
