difference in threshold sound in c/j and relic

I just recently started to use relic mode a little more often and I was wondering if anyone else hears a difference in the threshold when switching between the 2 modes. Tonite in relic mode the threshold was a steady soft hum. I switched to c/j and it was a little raspy sounding. I was using a dd 6x10 on factory presets, ground was around 70.
I was able to make finds in both modes although ground is hard and dry right now, had mostly 2-3 inch hits.
Thanks and HH

You are not the only one who noticed that. Using the stock 950 coil my MXT tends to quiet down significantly in the relic mode, but has a bit of chatter in the CJ mode. The chatter should go away once you start swining the coil. As to the exact reason why this happens, I'm not sure, but someone here is bound to know.

I always use relic mode for coin hunting. Occasionally CJ to recheck. With the 5" excel you need to use relic for better depth. I had a noisy 6 by 10", the salt mode quieted down in bad soil.hh

and the Relic mode with a centered trigger is often the quietest operating audio you might get from an MXT. Toggle the trigger forward and it is often a bit noisier. Noise with the trigger forward is very similar to Coin/Jewelry in either toggle setting. Naturally, this all depends on the discriminate setting, to a degree, as well as the Gain setting.
I almost always hunt with a Gain of +3 and discrimination set at the preset mark or lower, all dependent on the site and desired targets.
One thing I noticed with my first MXT, and never could figure it out, and have experienced it with my seond MXT as well as my present MXT, is that <EM>sometimes</EM> when using the Coin jewelry mode for a while the audio sort of 'smoothed out' and it was less noisy. Going into the Relic mode to compare the audio, I found that it was then noisier than Coin & Jewelry.
I started to ponder on it and shortly gave up, coming to a very simple conclusion. The MXT is the MXT. It has it's quirks to go with its strong points. If I want <EM>"silent search"</EM> operation I can grab a Classic model. If I want an audio threshold (which I prefer) but without the raspy, noisy threshold audio of the MXT, I could just grab an XL Pro.

I found that if you use the 5" EXCELLERATOR coil from Kellyco, you can turn the threshold down to zero and search in a silent mode without losing depth with my MXT

... can be done with any coil. Just turn the threshold to BARELY silent, don't turn it well into the silent range, or some depth loss on small targets will occur.

is what I was referring to with the Classic series in the Disc. mode.
Yes, you can reduce a setting below the threshold level, but the MXT, and similar threshold-based models, are designed to operate at their peak performance with a 'proper' slight audio threshold.
Sure you can reduce it enough to operate silent, but, as Jim pointed out, you want to just barely get into the silent zone. Reducing it too much will definitley effect the performance of the MXT. Especially so with deep targets and/or small targets.

Went to ESTER SHORT and got a gold coin on Wed--Only thing was it was a 1989 Canada DOLLAR--Looked good for a half second---Deathwind1

After owning 2 MXT's and using a friends MXT, I went
back to using my reliable XL Pro. It doesn't have,
as you say, "quirks", just consistent operation in
all soils.

those who know me are aware that I feel the XL Pro is about the best of the best from White's! <img src="/metal/html/smile.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":)">
Quiet, smooth audio threshold and no "quirks" to deal with like there are with the MXT, or "programming challenges" of the two other up-line models. I mainly favor the MXT over the XL Pro due to the slower motion requirement when I am working in very dense brush and/or heavily littered sites. For open area "cruising" and even on the beaches, I prefer the XL Pro.

Monte,
I find that all metal detectors have there quirks as
do the operators.(me included) But they (detectors)do have there differences and the two MXT's that I owned, as well as my friends, were no exception. One
of them had exceptional sensitivity to tiny gold, the
other two didn't. Another one of the three, had a
dead-on VDI, the other two didn't. And so on.
I must lucked out and got one the better XL Pro's, because it will outdo the 3 MXT's.

Out of curiosity, what hunk of Colorado are you in ... <EM><STRONG>and</STRONG></EM> ... since you have had and used MXT's I am curious what the ground phase readings are in your general area?
I want to get back over there some time in the next year, if possible, and hunt some more around Greeley. Took most of a two week vacation over that way several years ago and realy enjoyed it. Only had an XLT & Classic ID & Shadow X2 with me on that trip. It was just a short time after the Classic ID had been out. I think I plucked about 20-25 'silvers' out of Greeley on that trip, plus some other good stuff.
I hope you enoy your XL Pro, as I am certain that you will each time you go afield!
