Difference between the Irish/Aussie and Malaysia Excal?

Hi Guys, I have seen a few posts regarding how the new Malaysia Excals are inferior to the ones made in Ireland and Australia. If so or if not...why? I'm sure theres alot of opinions here. I have a SE pro that was one of the last made in Ireland and havent had a problem yet. Thanks in advance guys and happy hunting!:minelab:#1

I have a Excalibur II from Malaysia. Its a few days from being one year old. It has spent 54 days at Minelab this first year. the threshold switch broke. It was replaced by them and the unit came back running better than when it left. Its now been home about 2 months and its seems to be acting up again??? The threshold raises and the hunt goes on just takes a few minutes to have to be readjusted. Not sure its a problem yet. I also thought It would not smooth out in AM?PP but the lat hunt it was ok. I am still trouble shooting before I think about sending it back. I am able to find targets they all just seem to be very loud. Perhaps the volume is not correct as this was also fixed along with the AM/PP switch. Waiting for a Gt to arrive on Monday so i won't be caught with out a Minelab.

My Malaysia Excal II works great, no problems here. This is my 3rd Excal and I actually believe it works better than the Excal 1000 & 800 for the lakes I hunt here. It runs smoother in discrimination and there is less static heard and it finds Gold.

I didn't know the Excals manufacturing was switched over that long ago. Got my SE last spring and it was still made in Ireland.

could just be older stock. every now and then an Explorer II pops up brand new also.

it would be interesting to see how many are actually made of each, each year, sov, explorer, etrac, excal, advantage........

I would guess the explorer is their best selling unit and has been for quite a while. Its the one they have paid the most attention to(upgrades/new versions).

my etrac/explorers/excal and sov are all "made in ireland". when this whole move started and announcements came out about moving to malaysia I remember a few posts stating they were all "made in australia" but assembled in Ireland and now malaysia. Anyone know if thats true or not?
Not that it matters to me, I wouldnt hesitate to buy new right now if I wanted another one.

Aaron,
Bought an Etrac (made in Ireland) in Jan,
used 3 months and the keypad went bad.
Sent it in and the keypad was replaced. Runs like a top since then.
In my opinion (take it for what it's worth)
It really does not matter where it was made,
it's more of a lemon or rock solid situation, and more than
likely it's rock solid. As long as it's passing QC inspections
before it leaves the factory they are usually good to go. Asian factories
are EXTREMELY advanced and efficient. I think the excals are used hard in
mostly beach situations which is hard on equipment and user abuse is often
a contributing factor to some of the breakdowns.
My excal was also pre Malaysian but I would not hesitate to buy a new one made there!
Good luck,

I am not impressed at all with Malaysian made excals.. I am on my 3rd new excal and just sent that one in since it wont find anything deeper then 2 inches.. but short history first.. the 1st new excal did nothing but scream back it went.. got send a new number 2 excal.. would false constantly in the water, great on sand.. didnt spend this kind of money for a wet/dry sand only detector.. wanted it work properly.. 3rd one.. seemed great, no falsing no screaming..finally after a month of no finds ( less then 1.00 worth of on the top clad) I buried a gold wedding band at 8 inches deep dry sand.. tried every number on the sens.. not one sound.. tried PP mode nothing, so now its in ml repairs.. would I buy another one made in malaysia, I think not.. am very disquisted.

when i heard that minelab was moving from Ireland to Malaysia i could not believe it i knew the quality was no longer going to be there, and i was right, i bought a new explorer se pro the end of Jan and one week later i noticed when i put the battery in the detector after charging it, the detector came on by itself you did'nt need to turn the power button on. so my dealer sent it in to minelab and they are going to replace it. i thank god my excal is made in Ireland

How many years did it take for japan to have high quality stuff? ...Well maybe these days you would wait half of that time for malaysia to improve minelab products ,I will wait... in the mean time I will use my well made machine from ???? of the USA
