Difference between the Gold vs. Pro Question>>>

I know the 2 differ and most prefer the AT Pro. Is there any advantage the AT Gold has over the Pro?

The first thing that comes to my mind is depth, and sensitivity to the lower conductors (Gold). In fact, I am thoroughly impressed with the depth and sensitivity. In my opinion, the AT Pro wastes 3 of it's 6 modes on imitating an ACE. Although you can't modify the discrimination settings, or use notching, it doesn't bother me as I would either hunt in all metal, or the disc 1 mode which accepts all targets, but provides tone id. If changing discrimination settings, or using notch features, then you will probably want the AT Pro. It's a great detector, but the AT Gold is my pick. Good luck with your decision...

Thought I would add, go to the Garrett website and download the manuals for each. Read through them to learn more about the two units, and perhaps look at some of the videos available on the website, and youtube...

Yes there are big differences in these units which are documented and reviewed all over the web.
The answer is not simple and, I think some research is probably in order.

Your best bet... if you really want to understand these machines is to Go ogle
AT Pro vs AT Gold
and you will find with loads of good articles and opinions comparing and contrasting their features (even within this forum, if you search) .
Also, take a look at all the instructional videos for both units on the Garrett site.

I would sum it up by saying
- yes... the AT Gold has some advantages over the AT Pro
- yes... the AT Pro has some advantages over the AT Gold

Both are excellent detectors and the best model is the one that would meet YOUR personal detecting needs.
You need to really understand the functional differences of each model and see which has features that are best FOR YOU

I feel that most experienced detector enthusiasts would consider the AT Pro more of a general purpose machine and the AT Gold (because of it's unique features) more of a specialty machine for small nugget prospecting or use in heavily mineralized soil conditions. I suspect the AT Pro appears more popular because it's more general purpose, has functionality not found in the AT Gold and is less expensive.

You could always pick up one of each. LOL
Happy Hunting

The All Metal Mode is what makes the AT Gold the far superior machine. Many people have the AMM phobia. because they don't understand how to use it. It's not something you want to learn on your own--Clive Clynick has some very good books that discuss AMM (best books on AMM by far). There is a huge amount of target info that only AMM can provide.

Deeper, more sensitive to tiny targets with the true all metal mode, adjustable threshold which make the AT Gold better suited for tiny bits of gold. It also has a ground balance window, so you can set an expanded mineralized area resulting in not ground balancing the unit as often when hunting in mineralized areas.

Like John shows the better depth, also better target grab in AMM. Gold signals are harder to detect in discriminate mode. Tilted targets, anything that makes them weak, these are easily missed. You still have the target ID to work with, it's not like you have to dig every target. You listen for the good ones, then take a glance at the ID number. As Clive says many people are addicted to the beeps and don't pay attention to all the characteristics that are available in AMM. Wish I had his books thirty years ago.
