Robert E. Lee well worth remembering also on this day
By Mitch Chase
On the state of Alabama's official calendar, todays holiday is listed as Martin Luther King Jr. & Robert E. Lee Birthday, commemorating the Jan. 15, 1929, birthday of the great civil rights leader and the Jan. 19, 1807, birthday of the great Civil War leader.
Many, no doubt, may be embarrassed by the fact that Dr. King shares his holiday with a Confederate general. This may explain why so many in this state choose to ignore the Lee part of the King & Lee holiday.
You don't have to be politically correct to see irony here. Chalk it up to the vagaries of the calendar (and don't tell the children about this Lee fellow).
But in a real sense, there's no irony in these two sons of the South sharing the same holiday. Both were great Americans
