Did you ever wonder about finds validity...

Was metal detecting with some guy who found old coins. When he brought them over to where I was to show me, they weren't very dirty and could read the dates and see the coin. These weren't silver either which I know come out cleaner than buffalo's or indian heads. I did dig a buffalo from the same field but it was in worse shape, couldn't really make much out on it 'til it was cleaned up and the date was worn off. Just makes me question why his coins weren't covered in mud and dirt like mine. I do know of one guy who posted a youtube dig but found out he planted the find beforehand. Guess I just don't understand it.

It's would be a shame to think that someone would go to such extremes as to "one up" a fellow detectorist, as we all know, there always seems to be competition in every sport/hobby. fishing as well as hunting has turned out to be that way! remember when you would go fishing for bluegills with worms and a bobber? sharing your finds is part of the fun in detecting! I have fallen into the "got to have the latest toy" thing myself ! But I still feel like a little kid when I pull out some silver or a really cool old coin!:clapping: I have met a few folks that have to feed their egos by blowing smoke up your
A**. sooner or later they will find out that they have no one to show off to anymore!!..That being said, keep an open mind and just smile;) thinking about the dirty coins you will pull out of your pocket and post on this forum later on! HH...C-Dog

I would bet that there are some people out there that stretch the truth a bit when it comes to their treasure. On the other hand, I have been shocked at the variety of conditions that the coins I find are in. I have not been doing this long, but I have found no rhyme or reason to why a new penny can look like it was run over by a truck and why older coins can look like they are fresh from the mint. I wonder sometimes if the newer clad coins have less durable metals then the old ones. Im sure there is someone out there who knows better than I but its a mystery to me. Either way its fun to dig up stuff!

You are only required to believe in what YOU find ..

There are guys who fake their finds (I've seen it done).

Is it dishonest? Sure. Is is pathetic? You bet.

But if someone is that insecure, what can you do?

It's kind of sad when you think about it, so I let it slide if I doubt them.

Depends on what the BS meter is reading. 85 or higher and I start to wonder

To be honest, sometimes I wonder about some postings on the various forums including this one - especially when it is a posting by a "newbie" - you know the the kind - first or second time out and they manage to find a half dozen silver coins and one or 2 gold rings in one hour of detecting.

I dont think there is anyone who hasnt had those questions about finds. But if it turns you off just stop posting to their thread or hunting with them. Ive also seen a lot of people take flack for calling someone out so its just not worth the effort. Another reason i dont post many finds and feel my time can be better spent responding to questions and help. If you have been in the hobby very often you will hunt with someone that likes to show off questionable finds.

I think metal detecting is like hunting or fishing, there are some who have to be the best no matter what it takes. It doesn't take long to figure out who is the real deal.

Hi DirtAngler, detecting opens the door for all manner of new folks to meet, and being in a relaxed mode while detecting may sometimes cause us to naturally lower our guard a bit when approached by another digger. That's one way we meet new friends etc.and usually has good results, but not without some srange encounters. Lol, there are some real cool dudes and some really weird characters to cross our paths. Your post reminded me of a friend I had that loved to go around on the job and show every new hire a picture of his "new" girlfriend. He would go on about how much he was in love and was wanting to marry the girl,,,,, and trying and get the new dude to agree as to how beautiful she was. Don't know where he found the pic of such an Ugly woman, but she gave the word new meaning, and all the while he was looking in the eyes of the new dude as he stammered and studdered as he tried to agree with him without throwing up.She was that Ugly and he knew all the old hands he had already pulled that on were watching and listening to the new guys reaction. I could never do something like that, but my friend loved it! He was a "Character". They are out there , mostly harmeless, sometimes just wanting some attenton,or "just messing with you" but mostly just wanting to make another friend. That's the way I try and think of it,,, since we all have our own different, and sometimes weird ways of doing things and apporaching folks, It works for me. HH, Charlie

well im kinda one of those newbies i have done really well in the western part of the country and now its slowed down for me and i do think that some people dont belive me nut o well i have only been detecting for a year now but i used to go every day now a couple times a week is all i get out and i found a 21 morgan 2 barber dimes lots of merks weeties trade tokens golden brouch silver pendent just stuff but hours wise i have spent alot o my first week i found a 1893 barber and im hooked ever sence but one thing i like to do i know it could be considerd mean but if my dad who goes with me now and isnt doing to well on finding anything good ill seed the the ground when he is not looking i got some fake spanish reals i thinks thats what the call them planted them and on time i got a fake 1849 mormon gold coin that books at 300k and i had to tell him fast it was fake becouse i think he was going to have a hart attack but it put a smile on his face and made his day a bit better like i say i hunt all the time and some of my frends only get out 2 or three times a month they cant belive im so lucky but its only part luck but its also time and odds and location i read about guys back east and i cant belive what they find in one trip. i belive that everyone will get there day if they keep swinging there is a guy that i know that went with his wife to a teachers convention took his bounty hunter with him went to a old park for a bit while his wife was at the convention and hit a hord of silver coins but odds are you do it long enough youll end up with something cool

there are some walter mitty types out there detecting but coins can come up in various conditions depending on the soil.
heavy black mineralised can leave silver heavilly oxidised and even eat away at the silver .
very acid soil can leave bronze coins wafer thin and nearly eaten away completely .
clay soils can leave silver very clean and a rub of the finger leaves it looking very clean .
i have found hammered silver coins that are 500 years old and with a wipe of the fingers and some spit leaves them very clean looking ,where they came from a clay type soil .

Probably best to keep an open mind on this one....I know I have found coins that have been out of circulation for at least 43 years, near the surface and "new" looking. My guess, when this happens, is that someone has bought them, and then they, or their kids, have lost them. There could be numerous ways that "new" old coins could find their way under the coil....salting is merely one way.

True story, a few months back. Doing a schoolyard with my E-Trac buddy. He walks over. In his hand is a buffalo nickel and indian head penny. They had been laying on top of the grass. Perfectly clean with absolutely no corrosion. Probably a kid brought them to school and dropped them.
