DID NOT EXPECT TO FIND THIS...........

This is one of my more interesting finds of the summer. This item was found at a old private dwelling about 4-5 inches down under two old pine trees....the pine needles alone were about 2 inches thick. Since trees cant talk I will give you my analysis on how and why this object ended up where it did. I believe many years ago a child living in the home at one time or another used this for either a digging tool or maybe used it for play fighting with friends or another sibling. This" letter opener" which I believe it to be was probably taken out of the house, played with, dropped and forgotten for the last 70+ years. Thanks for reading my post....J.B.

If I had to guess I would say copper. It came out of the ground in fairly good shape, I suspect the pine trees and the thick carpet of needles preserved it from the elements. What do you think? thanks....j.b.

Very nifty find. On wheats and IH's the pine and cedar needles usually leave green warts on the coins. Since your find does appear to be pure copper, makes me wonder if it isn't the bronze alloy that reacts with the acidity of the trees. Its in beautiful shape. I'll just bet some kid stole that out of the house to dig in the dirt with it. I'll bet mama wasn't happy.

Thanks for the picture.

70 was the first figure that popped in my head but remember this is all speculation. I'm not sure how old this thing really is and exactly what metal its made out of. The for sure facts are that I found it at a very old home site and that it is unique and that it might be a letter opener. I Will have to do some research to maybe get a few more answers. also, this item does not have a makers mark on it so that also may or may not give some clues to the history behind this find. thanks again

Very nice relic !

OR...

maybe the lady of the house received a letter from "the other woman", confirming what she had already been thinking. When the husband came home, while standing under the tree, reading the letter, she murdered him with the letter opener, and buried him in a shallow grave she dug, right there munder that tree.

As she shoveled dirt back in the hole, she tossed in the murder weapon, and covered it up.

If you kept on digging, who knows what you might have uncovered! :yikes:

So, he would be looking for a "pocket spill" for sure. :nerd:

priceless find, I wonder what its worth just kidding nice find the yard must have more treasure to be found, good luck.

I think that the pine tree like most grow very quick, either it was there prior to the tree or better yet. That the tree was planted as a very small sapling before the storm rolled in and not a child but a adult only needed this small implement to dig a small hole and plant the tree. He or she just got up and admired their new trees and forgot all about the letter opener. By the time the storm ended they could no longer see where it had lied?

I believe Bill is partially correct, the envelope opener was used to open the letter from the other woman,
but the man of the house was killed in the Library with the Candle stick The back yard is where she read
the letter and just dropped it in unbelief, because it was dropped in thick pine needles it was never
seen again until you unearthed it . This is not a murder weapon, but merely a tool ! George S
