Did I junk my Outlaw?

Kapok

Active member
I was crossing what I thought was a dry creek bed. Turned out to be a sinkhole of black mud and I went in up near my armpits. My Outlaw now chatters non-stop in discriminate mode. I took the faceplate off and drying everything off--yes there was some wet mud inside the casing. Do you think if I let it dry out it'll be okay or will I end up sending it in for repairs?

You are lucky/blessed that you made it out of the muck, now that you are OK, I'd call Rusty.

Gladly, who and where is Rusty? I assume it is someone at Tesoro? Duh, how did I not know this. Rusty, the main man at Tesoro!

I'm going to let it dry out overnight and see what happens in the morning. Hoping for the best.

Your biggest problem may be water in the coil. Not sure if they're waterproof or just resistant but it won't evaporate off like an open control box will.
Hope it works out for ya!

Bill, I have used the 8" concentric at wading depths on my Toltec ll and it did not leak, this was before I got a Tiger Shark in 2001. The Tiger Sharks are good to a depth of 200 ft.

I wasn't sure. I think Kapoc will be OK once the control unit drys out. Sure hope so.

I hope so too!

bugger the machine I would be grateful to be alive that adventure doesn't sound like much fun :yikes:

having said that hope it comes around after a dry out.

Hi Kapok, sounds as you have turned it on after it got dunked. That's a No No ! Yes, do as Hombre suggested and call Tesoro and ask for Rusty, He is "The Man" you need to talk to. I could tell you a long Horror story about what I did about salvaging a Tesoro Sidewinder after being submerged by Katrina but it finally gave up the ghost after 5-6 years and is now unrepairable because of Katrina.. If I had sent it in to Tesoro instead of going through a drawn out process of my own of re-submerging soakings and long dryouts , it might still be alive today. I didn't and it AIN'T! Call Rusty! HH, Charlie

Okay, good advice. I'll do that. Do I just call the main phone # at Tesoro?

just give it wash off with a hose and chuck it in the microwave that fix it :lmfao:

yes starting electronics while wet is not the best plan , is it dried out now? see if it fires up ? I am interested to see how it goes !!

AJ

That should work, just be sure you go to Tesoro Electronics, The "Official Web Site", and ask for Rusty. They are all great folks to work with so fret not , your Outlaw will be in good hands! HH, Charlie

For the record, it started the chattering noise while I was getting out of the mud and I immedately shut it down. I did try it once for about 5 seconds once I got home. At that point I turned it off and took the faceplate off. It wasn't really super wet inside, but definitely had some water/mud drops in there as well as in the battery compartment. I left it open overnight and when I get home I am going to try to resist the urge of trying it again. I'll do my best to call Tesoro before I do. But I'm an impatient sort...

All is well! I called and talk to Tesoro and the guy (I forgot to ask if he was Rusty) told me if it was completely dry and clean inside to put it back together and try turning it on. It was completely dry inside tonight, and I spent some time with a Q tip getting out any remaining smudges of dried mud and screwed the face-plate back on. It started up and it sounds normal although I have not field tested it yet. I think if it had been completely immersed and full of mud I might have had to send it in, but as it is I think it'll be fine.

One small thing--I seem to have lost the tiny 1.5mm allen set-screw for my GB knob. Where would I look to get a replacement for it?

Some hardware stores have the set screws..

Hey Kapoc,
Try and see if you can get one of the dessicant packs and put it in your control box. Any moisture will be sucked up and eliminate the possibilty of any corrosion down the road.
Just a thought.

Good idea!

I may have to remove one from one of the other knobs and take it down to the hardware store and see if I can match it. Either that or buy a new knob for a couple of bucks.
