Did I get Lucky Gold Nugget in Copper Matrix

Glovas

New member
I took a weekend journey to the Black Hills of South Dakota on a weekend prospecting hunt and I picked up this it weighs 29.5 grams and you can clearly see copper and what appears to see gold. I scratch tested it and it looks like gold but 10k melts I am thinking it's 8k or. I will upload a scratch test of copper, nugget and a 10k ring. Help please any suggestions. Greg

Here is a scratch left to right Silver Ring, Float Copper,Nugget in Question?,10k ring,14k Ring.
Looks like gold but?

Well a good suggestion was made so I had to follow up on it could it be brass/bronze? I took it one step further. I ran a scratch test PLEASE be the Judge.
Next question where would you go to sell it for the highest value?

The first thing I do in cases like this is read all the geological information possible about the area to see if similar finds are reported and what they are. Looks like a natural copper alloy but that is about as far as pictures on the Internet will get you. Hard to sell without knowing how much if any gold content there is.

What is missing in these tests is the acid to eliminate that which is not gold

For my limited use of gold testing, I like and use the Mizar M24. Quick, easy and accurate enough for me.

I have to admit to being spoiled absolutely rotten. The nuggets I dig up I never have any question about them being gold. Now jewelry, that is another issue. Thanks Larry, I will look into the Mizar.

Glovas, gold never looks deferent than its yellow color no matter how many years it is buried in to earth. My opinion is copper nugget because I have found many of them almost every time I go for hunting. So remember gold comes out always yellow, unless is hidden in to something else.

The area around Sheridan Lake had several copper mines. Other mines with names like Blue Lead had similar ore. Black Hills Gold has some copper which gives it a more reddish color and other colors elsewhere in the Hills. The jewelers combine the different gold for variation in the trademark grape leaf motif. Some of the old timers could tell you where your gold came from because of the color.

Nice specimen either way! I've detected here a long time and haven't found anything as cool as that.
