Did anyone else notice.

That Tesoro didn't' advertise in this months Lost Treasure? Seems odd since they have had the back cover for at least the last 3 years.

I would have thought that the days of using magazines to promote detecting equipment or infact anything these days is on the demise due to most folks buying online,of course i could be wrong but other detecting Brands are producing alot more online pdf format magazines or adverts or even using social networks rather than the old magazines.

Its not cheap to have a colour advert in a magazine but facebook and the like is basically a free outlet for them, just observations of course but it would make alot of sense,i dont buy detecting magazines these days especially when alot of the information is free on the internet.

Just my personal opinion and nothing else.

Seems to me they did the smart thing to do, I do not buy treasure magazines anymore as there is better reading on the various MD'ing forums.

Back in the stone age, before the internet there were only 2 TH'er mags available, W&E Treasures and Lost Treasure, of the 2 W&E is the better mag.

Actually back in the 70's, there were a lot more magazines for treasure hunters. I stopped buying them when the magazines became a lot thinner with less content and more advertising.
As well as increase of cost per magazine. Still the same reason I don't buy them today. As you mentioned the internet is now king for instant up to date news etc. Magazines take about a 3-4 month lead time to put out an issue. And if they are quarterly, the contents is all old news.

To bad Tesoro doesn't use Facebook, internet etc. to their advantage. Would be nice to see a new online Tesoro MDI magazine, last one is dated 2010.

Ya like even says , its almost all advertising , they should give them away .

i didn't notice but will look when i get home. judging from all the magazine bashing that most who responding don't get the magazines any more. i enjoy reading all i can and watching any shows that come up but it seems like most on here don't.

Plenty of good metal detecting web sites, and good youtube video's. I would rather watch a youtube video of someone keeping it real.

The days of magazines are practically history. They get thinner and thinner every year. Times have changed, the internet is king.

And by the way, if you call Tesoro and talk to them, they are busier than ever and working their butts off to keep up. They are a small company compared to the others. They are niche company. They make great products and have a strong following. Don't read into missing a magazine ad too much. Give them a call, as always they are glad to talk to their customers.

It would be fun to sit in on one of their SWOT analysis meetings pertaining to some guerrilla marketing and products...If they are truly busy/profitable and dont want any more business volumn, that is a valid concept. Thats what Niche Companies do! Climb the curve and flatten off at a comfortable operating plateau...A continuing Growth Plan can be a problem...margins can erode, all sorts of stuff falls through the cracks, and the Brand Name is at risk of being lost in a commodity world...playing the 'lowest price' game all the way to the bottom!

Patagonia outerwear did the Niche Company' strategy climb and leveled off intentionally back in the 80's-90's...kept a loyal and rabid following, high GP, was able to meet demands and refused to go the high volumn/low price commodity route..it worked for them back then, I have no idea what they are doing now...

I would suggest that if Tesoro ever wanted to game out and plan their future, they should bring in a few of you fellows for an informal SWOT meeting....sign a NDA....a guy would then evaluate their top selling rigs GP etc...what products do they really make GP off of, and market those...keep your base business volumn, but push/market your high GP units into the End User base....that takes focus, strategy, and marketing of some sort, even if its just here on the Forums for free, or updating and having somebody in charge of the website..

A guy cant mfg a high volumn of low GP rigs unless theres some money makers in the mix...by simply adjusting some mfg and (possibly free) marketing effort into the money makers, their total year volumn of machines COULD stay the same, yet their overall Company GP would go up! Its not rocket science, but it takes a strategy, focus, understanding of the market, and timing to make it happen somewhat effortlessly.

Heck, I dont know, but a guy would think if their Shark Series is where the real money is at, it would behoove them to get some more water hunter eyeballs on them...guys with gold fever will really drop some dime!
Mud.

The comment made they are busier than ever,i do hope that is the case and not Chapter 11 ;)

Better buy your new Tesoro now before its too late. They will become a hot commodity in the used machine market..............

Yeah Mega B...I hope thats not the case either...It would be sad to see a Company with such a strong Brand, a loyal base, and most importantly the Spirit Jack put out go under for any financial reason...Most Companies would kill to have the Tesoro Brand and legacy strengths! These are valuable! The rest is just details...

The thing is, we dont know...Rainy may have some inside scoop to their health that would set everybody at ease?....For some reason this morning I am thinking about some really cool things that Tesoro could do IF they needed help...I would prefer not to waste any thought needlessly if all is good.....A simple informal SOTU by someone inside Tesoro posted here would alleviate the concern and eliminate the conjecture...In fact, it would be a good idea for any company to post something like this.."Thank you Customers! We are coming off our best year ever! our new model was favorably received, everybody here is happy and healthy"...Or..."Help a bit guys, we incurred an unexpected expense/flood/disaster this year, we need a big Spring sales season to get back on track...We ask you to find a buddy and get them to buy a rig ASAP"

If they DO need help, all they gotta do is ask...we are not just a bunch of dummys out here picking up pennies...that would indeed be an insult if they went under without even giving us a chance to help....
Mud

ps: sorry guys, full disclosure, I'm not even a Teeboy...but I have some great hunter friends that are and aspire to join the group someday...

mmmmmmmmmmmm strange I have just read this as I just had a gut feeling Tesoro might be packing it in, this is not based on any facts just a gut feeling.

with the sad passing of Jack and their no presence any more on forums with Robert who was always a big help no longer around.

the new machine a no show and its starting to feel like ????

maybe they are off on a new venture just from reading Tesoros websites little history blog they have done some other things along the way and maybe Detectors are not paying the bills any more??

time will tell and I hope I am wrong !!

which issue is that. I read the may issue today which I thought was the last one I got. there was no ad on the back but there was a small ad in the magazine and they're giving away a tejon which is given to the magazine to pay for advertising

I kinda noticed that the add's in the magz kinda stopped after Jack passed. I also heard word NOW THIS IS JUST GRAPE VINE CRAP so don't take this to heart as how things get started. A potential bigname may be joining Tesoro . Just old news tho. I didn't take that to much heart as it's just hear say.

So if someone else mentiones Fisher /Tesoro merging. It's hear say. Nothing more. Just Like the Cazador . It's all hear say.

Things are changing so quickly these days because of technology and a lot of newspaper and magazine businesses have faded away cause now we have the internet. Back in the day print was all we had to learn by if you didn't have some mentor or club to show you the ropes and get you through the learning curve. Maybe these days the cost of print advertising is more than its worth in the long run:shrug: I will say that I do miss the Tesoro periodicals that they use to print. Good hunting!

tesoro still prints their magazine. that's what the ad in the last issue of lost treasure was about.
