Diamond Testers ?

Sand Scoop

New member
Not knowing anything about but want to buy a tester. Any suggestions.Basically I'd like to get a decent inexpensive tester that will do the job without breaking the bank.I checked Ebay but have NO idea what might be a good one.

I took a plunge myself an dordered the cheapest that there is. Another idea, try taking suspect diamond and see if it will scratch glass.

Good question, mine is still enroute in the mail) But, I'll post results once it gets here. I have a ring that scratches glass, but I want to confirm that they are diamonds.

Make sure whatever you buy can tell the difference between Diamonds and Moissanite. There are several types on the market the most common being the thermal probe. This instrument has a small tip which is heated by a battery, this is touched on the stone being tested. The rate at which it cools is measured by a circuit in the tester which gives a signal if the stone is diamond. This tester works because a diamond is one of the best conductors of heat in the world (they are after all forged in Volcanos and in hotspots in the earth). These testers are very good but can be fooled by moissanite.

If you are going to invest in a diamond tester, then spend the money and get one that tests most stones. You will not be sorry that you spent the extra money. Nothing worse than sitting there looking at a gadget that you bought and wishing it did more!

i was told that a easy way to test if real or CZ, is to breath on it,(to fog it up) and if it fogs up,it is not real, i have never tried this so how true it is i don't know. can anyone confirm this? I don't: have any diamonds to try LOL

I also feel it's important to have a tester that will differentiate between diamond and moissanite. If you test a stone with a "diamond only" tester you will always be wondering if it just might be a moissanite. Moissanite will test as diamond with a standard tester. The dual testers cost more money but are worth it. To save money, our detecting club used club funds to purchase a Mizar DiamondNite DN-1 tester. I bring it to all of our club meetings for the members to use if needed. It's also available between meetings if someone finds something really spectacular. That way, we don't all have to buy our own testers.
