There is one up on an auction site with two days left and its at $388...... What's up with that ? We're they that good for finding gold nuggets. Are they good detectors for relic hunting too ? Seems like alot of dough for an older machine.

All the gold machines bring premium prices. Look at the old Fisher GoldBug II boxes.

They run at higher frequencies, the Diablo being 20kc.

I found my first Arizona gold picker swinging a Diablo Micro-max back in 2000. It's been around for a while but is still certainly capable of finding gold as long as your coil swings over it! I like the "Hot Rock Adjust" mode which basically allows this gold detector to have 2 separate manual ground balance settings which helps when dealing with hot rocks. The Diablo Micro-max is an all-metal mode only gold detector that runs at 17.8 kHz so no discrimination but it can still find relics. Ha! People will pay the money for things if they want them bad enough for their own reasons:shrug:

One last comment about the Diablo...it makes a great bench tester when checking ore specimens for possible metal/mineral content!

Diablo and Diablo uMax completely different animals, make sure you know what you're bidding on. The original Diablo was kinda sorta okay back in the stone age, not worth $25 now. The Diablo uMax was introduced in early 1996, and is still regarded as a good gold machine. They're particularly good in noisy ground. Unless your hearing is really sharp, you'll need headphones, it's not very good on the speaker.

For reasons I never understood, only a few Diablo uMaxes were made. The ones that did get into people's hands almost never go up for sale used, those who have 'em won't let go of 'em. When they do show up on the used market, they command a premium price.

The Diablo uMax is strictly a gold machine, and without having a discrimination mode most folks would rate it as useless for relic hunting.

******* a bit of a reminisce *******

About 2000, a used Diablo uMax came up for sale for (as I recall) about $350 from a reputable dealer. I was not feeling rich at the time and didn't spring for it. Took me about a week to realize my mistake and began kicking myself in the butt over it..................until about 2008, when Jim Straight heard how I was still kicking myself in the butt, he was getting too worn out to do much gold beeping any more, and gifted me with his very beat up but still perfectly functional personal unit. Which I can assure you I still have and it is NOT for sale!

Dave for some reason I assumed they were talking about the Micro-max version...appreciate the heads up with the extra Diablo info. That was a neat story about acquiring your Diablo Micro-max from Jim Straight...a legendary prospector and prospecting author:thumbup:

seen one sell on here few months ago was like new the seller struggled to get 550 for it so who ever buys that piece of junk is getting well and truly ripped off :poke: I would pay 200 for it going to cost another 300 to get it looking like new again and really who uses this detector its a collectors item to hang on the wall.
