DFX versus MXT

I am trying to make the decision to move from DFX to MXT. Anyone out there able to tell me the advantages and disadvantages of such a move. DFX owner for 3 years.

I had an XLT for over 5 years (I loved it)but, got tried of having to scroll through the menu to change something.I got an MXT and LOVE it. 3 knobs and 2 toggles and thats it!!!H/H JOE

i had a dfx since they came out in the uk and have just traded it in for a exp2 ,still kept the mxt and all the coils though .nothing wrong with the dfx but its far easier to use the mxt and once its running right it will do the same job as the dfx ,so now its general ground clearance with the exp2 and then seek out the small silver with the mxt

I am curious to know if anyone who switched from DFX to MXT misses the tone id. Does the MXT lock on to targets easier than the DFX? I have also been told that with the 2 filter system you can hear some deeper tagets than with the DFX. What is the general opinion on that? This is for use mostly in parks, and at houses. And to Wolfie: Did the HotShot work better on the DFX or the MXT for you? And do you still own the HotShot?

basically because it is a very simple machine but
totally awesome in performance. The 2 tone ID
in the relic mode leaves no guessing as to what's in the ground. If you like to "fiddle" with an extensive menu-driven machine, the DFX is for you. BTW,both
machines are winners, can't go wrong. HH Richard

I have also HAD two MXT's, but I HAVE my third ... and FINAL ... MXT. Until something better comes along, this one stays!
Here are some points that I took into consideration:
Backlight for night hunting: ►DFX .. MXT
NOTE: I use my XLT for those applications as I have had much smoother performance from the XLT's than the DFX's.
AutoTrac®: DFX .. ►MXT
NOTE: I usually lock the GB on my XLT as well as my MXT, but the MXT has the continuous tracking and monitoring and an "instant update" of the GB setting at a flip of the toggle.
Ground Phase Reading: DFX .. ►MXT
NOTE: It works more accurately and faster than the XLT or DFX.
Ease of Use/Quick Control Adjustment: DFX ... ►MXT
NOTE: That's a strength of both the MXT & XL Pro
Audio Tone ID: ►DFX .. MXT
NOTE: I have this function available on the XLT, and I do use it on occasion. However, I prefer NO Tone ID most of the time.
I am sure I could figure out a few more things to note, but ... what I found when I had each of the DFX models was that IN MY BAD GROUND they just didn't work as well as other models I evanluated side-by-side. I used a few competitor's models that worked better in the types of sites I usually hunt than did the first two DFX's. I had much better performance and less falsing and 'noise' in the very iron infested sites with my XL Pro and XLT than I did with the DFX.
I sold or traded them off and when the MXT came out I got one. I liked both of the first two MXT's, and only parted with them due to medical expenses at the time.
Earlier this year I bought a brand new DFX thinking that, maybe, the first ones that I had were not working right and wanting to give the DFX one final try. I had the DFX with all 4 White's coils available at the time. I took it to about a half dozen challenging sites and quickly decided that was enough. I got an MXT again in May because I knew I wanted to have it's performance abilities for certain sites I work, and for my pending detecting trip.
I keep a 5" EXcelerator coil mounted almost full time, and in open areas I can opt for the stock 950, 12½" EXcelerator or 14" EXcelerator. About 90+% of the time I am hunting in very trashy environments and I prefer smaller coils, keeping a 5.3 BullsEye on my XLT as well.
I know I read about some DFX users who really like them, and that's fine. There is no such thing as a 'perfect' detector. That's why I maintain a stable of at least theee detectors in order to take advantage of their strengths based upon the site's challenges.
The slow-motion, quick-response of the MXT, combined with the excellent autotracking circuitry, external knobs for quick adjustment, and depth of detection make it a "must have" in my personal arsenal.

Hi,
I'll play contrarian here!
I guess I would have to ask what you do not like about the DFX? Assuming you have had it three years and it is working good for you, there may be no reason at all to go the an MXT.
In my opinion the MXT is a much stronger machine for gold nugget hunting, but for coins, etc. I can't say the MXT would be any better for you. It does depend greatly on your hunting requirements and the areas you hunt. I did personally carry an MXT and DFX for a couple hours in a park and compare responses on found targets. The machines were extremely close. In the end, I preferred the MXT because it was simpler to operate. But if you already are proficient with the DFX then this would be no big deal, perhaps. The MXT also costs less, but again, you already have a DFX.
So if you want to pursue prospecting, or have a yen to focus on low conductive targets like jewelry, the MXT might have some advantages for you. But if you are used to all those MXT adjustments the MXT might seem like a big step down in adjustability.
Pose the same question on the DFX forum and I'm sure the answers will run opposite to those one would expect on an MXT forum!
