DFX QUESTION

DFX USER

Member
I've had my new DFX for a couple month's now and I am using the 9.5 " (950) coil. I'm starting to learn the readings and I am pleased with the accuracy. I am interested in getting a much smaller coil for trashy areas. Does anyone know if the readings produced by the smaller coil will stay consistent with the readings from the larger coil or am I going to have to learn all over again when I use the small coil? Thanks for your help.

Welcome to the Findmall forums and congratulations on you new DFX. The VDI and DC Phase readings will be almost identical, but the depth might be off a little bit. The DFX is calibrated for depth using the stock 950. The 5.3 is a great 6 inch coil for hunting in the trash. If you use aftermarket coils the VDI might be off a little, but not that bad. I pay little attention to the VDI readings anyway and hunt primarily by sound because the VDI can be off quite a bit on deep targets and targets that are near trash.

For more DFX information, you might want to check out our forum just for DFX users too....a lot of good info and many people who are very experienced with the DFX.

Larry, I appreciate the quick response and the tips. Boy, I haven't learned to go by the sound yet but I'm sure I will pick it up. I was looking for a DFX Forum but must have missed it. I will look again.

I just began metal detecting 6 months ago with a Garrett Ace 250 and it took me 3 months to get good and familiar with it. I really got hooked on hunting so I decided to move up to the White's DFX. Obviously it is so much more sophisticated. I'm sure it will take some time to learn it but so far I am very pleased with it.

I hunted a Little League park today and the trash drove me crazy. I had a little sniper coil with the Ace and it really helped with that kind of hunting so that's why I want a smaill coil for the DFX. I was hoping that the readings would be the same as I really don't want to have to learn 2 different sets of readings.

Well thanks again and I will take your advice on that 5.3 coil as right now I am getting pretty good with the VDI readings.

Just a follow up. I purchased the White's 5.3 coil on Monday. Great recommendation! The readings are consistent with the larger 950 coil. I hunted a park yesterday with it and was totally amazed with the smaller coil. I was digging coins 6" deep with factory settings and the readings accuracy was amazing. I can see myself using the smaller coil more often than the 950 when hunting parks and ball fields. In 4 hours I dug 26 pennies, 5 nickels, 12 dimes and 16 quarters but the real prize was a beautiful large silver cross. It read 80 on the VDI and I thought I was digging a quarter. Obviously I was thrilled with the find.

I will now go back to areas that I previously hunted and use the 5.3 coil as I know it will work around trash that has been interfering with my readings. Thanks again.

I run an M6 & have the stock 9.5 a 6x8 sef and a 5.3, in my opinion the 5.3 is the best coil around any trash. I like all my coils but that 5.3 is just hard to beat. Just take your time because it doesn't cover alot of ground but hardly anything gets by it, I just love it.
