John, the number of adjustments might seem overwhelming to a new user, but don't fret. First and foremost learn the menu system and how to navigate it. The stock programs are not very hot, but they work well while learning the detector. My advice is start with the coin and jewelery program and tinker with the AC gain(bump it up), sweep speed( I usually go to 2) filters (2 or 3). The factory manual does a very good job at explaining what each adjustment does and once you get use to the feel, sound, and performance, you can start experimenting. To be honest, I use two custom programs and once in a great while, I will change one or two settings within these programs. It is a pretty neat detector that with a push of a button, you can hunt in single frequency or dual frequencies. I use a high trash program that even with a bigger coil does a very good job of hunting through trash. Don't give up on it even if you don't feel real comfortable with it. If you scroll down the page on this forum, you will see a DFX forum. The guys will help you through any problems or issues you might have. R.L.

RL covered it quite well and thats why they make user friendly units. Well learned(it will take time) its a super unit..
No miracle program or the like only programs that work well in your area and the net is loaded with programs for your perusal and start slow and after a while all will fall into place and with the push of a button you will have a personal favorite loaded and on your way...

Hi John. You made a good decision with the DFX. Awesome service if you need it from White's. I've owned mine for two yrs. now and have found more with it in those two yrs. than I found in 20 yrs. with other detectors. The main thing is like previous posts have stated. "DON'T GET DISCOURAGED" The more you use it the more you'll like it.

I just got the DFX a couple of weeks ago, and I'm hooked on metal detecting. I bought the book " Digging deeper with the DFX " and it explains the DFX very well. I started with the coins program, and after reading the book I've tried a couple of custom programs and they work so much better. I like it so much that I bought another one for my girlfriend, and she hooked just as I am. We live in Missouri, if someone has a better program for southern Missouri I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks,

Mike

Best advice I can give is make a test garden i thought i was doing good with my DFX, and made a test garden in the neighbors sand volley ball court since most of my hunting is at the beach. long story short... I couldn't hear a 6 in dime silver or clad till i started to fine tune it. Now I am confident I am getting good depth out of it...
