DFX DC Phase Readings Are Bouncy... What's Wrong?????

Hi,

I picked up a nice used DFX and have the DDWTDFX book by Jeff Foster. I have the DC Phase ON and I use it to try and get the VDI Ground reading so I can determine wheteher to use Dual Frequency, single 3 kHz, or single 15 kHz based on the recommendations in the book. However, I've been to 4 different sites that are pretty spread out within a 15-20 mile radius. Every time I Ground Balance, GB again and double check ( no change in threshold air/ground) and then put the coil on the ground to get the DC Phase reading, the numbers are bouncing around from -70's, then to the -80's, to -91, -93, -95, then +0.00 and then starts to climb up into the +VDI's (+70's & +80's & +90's). Then the cycle starts all over again with similar #'s. I tried 3 coils, the 950, 6X10 DD and the D2. Same thing. I tried changing/lowering the PAG, reducing the AC sensitivity, single 3 & 15 Khz, Best Data, and nothing seems to affect it. If I was in 1 area and this happened my guess is EMI. But 4 sites spread apart by miles?

So what could be causing this?

PS: It also happens when pinpointing over the target to get the VDI as well.

Thanks,

Jim

Are you holding the trigger in as in pinpoint? If not, you should. You also have to be sure you are in clean ground, otherwise you will be reading all targets in the ground including the ground itself.

The only other thing I can think of right now is maybe a bad ground connection on the main board. It might not be a bad idea to let White's service take a look at it, with used detectors, you just never know if the unit is 100%.

Hey Jim. Hope you get that worked out and can start posting some awesome finds. Good luck.

I have had two DFX's one second hand the other brand new, both did what you are describing. I just gave up and went by the GEB Coarse number.

I took the DFX back up to Mike the owner of the Whites Great Lakes Region today. Rather than mess around sending it in for repairs, Mike was gracious enough to allow me to return it, get credit, and pick up a brand spanking new DFX for a very reasonable out of pocket cost. :yikes: And he gave me a good deal on a few accessories, extra rod, coil cover, book, etc. Honestly, Mike took great care of me!

A quick check of the machine when I got home proved to be a major improvement with the DC Phase readings. Now they are steady as a rock with an occasional bump up or down in the reading. So it appears the old DFX did have an issue.

So Thank You Whites! Thank You Mike Brighty! :super: Your service gets 5 stars!

Mike is one of the best. Glad you got the problem solved Jim.

Stoked for you JIm. Now go make some finds and post em for us.
