dfx and xlt users:confused:

Hey Guys and Gals
I currently use an xlt spectrum. I am going to buy a dfx (I think) please give me your feel on the DFX vs the XLT is it worth it? I do really good with my old XLT but really just want another!! I am do no matter what my wife says:ranting::argue:

I would take a very close look at the MXT ot M6 you have 6.9khz for SILVER the MXT at 14khz good for gold and it have a relic mode that is hard to beat. The M6 have 7 tones and it

there are alot of great buys on the forums and ebay. I'm an MXT, M6 user
I have never used a DFX, probably a great machine, what ever you buy, keep the XLT just in case. HH

personaly i am no expert but i have used the xlt and the mxt and i have bought a gmt to hunt gold and meteorites, the xlt and the gmt would make a great pair that would cover it all, ask others about the gmt bab

Roger, I went from an XLT to a DFX. I thought the DFX was going to be a modified XLT..it wasn't. The first thing I noticed is that deep targets sounded much clearer. The DFX has more of a range on it's settings, although I don't like the 4 settings of the DFX Pre Amp vs. the 10 settings on the XLT. The DFX can hunt better around salt water with the 2 frequencies (3 kHz and 15 kHz). You can chose the filters on the DFX, which you can't on the XLT, and this helps in highly mineralized ground.

I thought the DFX was harder to learn than the XLT, but once you get to know it, you can go back over hunted hard ground and still pick up some good targets. I would keep your XLT as a back up and to make sure you like the DFX. Good luck, Ron

I really enjoy reading all the posts comparing the DFX and xlt, of course there are those who tried the DFX and failed, or possibly had a faulty machine. There are those who say there are no differences:stars:well there are! Enough for you to go from a xlt to a DFX...that is up to you! How about instead of me trying to battle with the xlt users I just list 10 FACTS about improvements the DFX has that are not even debatable:
FROM MY NOTES WHEN I CHOSE DFX>>>

1.The dfx is a multi frequency machine giving you the ability to operate in either 3MHz or 15 MHz or both!<Choice is good!

2. Ground filters- the dfx has from 2 to 6 ground filters, the xlt four. The added filters allow for better adjustment in highly mineralized soil.

3. Adjustable Sweep speed- the DFX has an adjustable sweep speed, the xlt is fixed. This allows for adjusting from a slow sweep in a high trash area to a fast sweep in an open field with less trash.

4.Microprocessor- The microprocessor on the DFX is set at 14.32 MHz, this allows for a much quicker screen response than the xlt, which is set at 6.75 MHz.

5. Back light- with the great adjust ability of the dfx you can even store the back light in custom programs, the xlt nope again!

6. New LCD technology on DFX- -4 to 158 degrees F, xlt>32 to 122. This helps with the darkening and fading.

7.tone i.d.- thanks to the digital software the DFX actually contains 191 tones!!! One for each vdi number.

8. The DFX can be balanced to both negative minerals and positive minerals at the same time thanks to the dual frequency operation. The xlt can not<this creates falsing when going in and out of salt water.

9. 3khz better for copper/silver coins

10. 15khz better for low conductivity targets such as gold!

I'm not knocking the XLT, but the advancements in technology should be noted! Obviously there were advances made with the DFX. Should you buy one? I think that is your choice. I remember reading Understanding the DFX by Jimmy Sierra, in it he lists quite a few more upgrades. I just thought I would list the first ten off my list.

DFX-Gregg

thanks for all the advice. i believe dfx is for me.

1. DFX is twin frequency but 3 khz is to low. Far better to have used the 6.59 of the XLT and added a higher frequency.
2.Extra filter choice. Good if used correctly but often not.
3.As 2. If filters and sweep speed are not run correctly in relation to each other performance suffers.
4.5.6. As much relevance tofinding things as painting the machine pink.
7. 191 tones. DFX and the XLT have to many tones, many beyond what people can cope with.
8.Improved beach performance. The XLT is poor on wet sand, can be made to work but will never deliver the performance of twin or multi-frequency.
9/10. 3khz better for silver/copper, 15 for gold and low conductors. Agreed. Only problem is that on every site you can have a mixture of both. Pick either frequency and its likely to be wrong as you just don't know whats there. Select either of the twin frequency modes and performance is compromised as against using a single frequency.

The main drawback of the DFX is that the extra adjustments do go a stage to far. Walking half way across a field can mean radical adjustment to settings to maintain optimum performance. Simple adjustments like recovery speed on the Spectrums (little rubbish lower the setting and gain depth) don't work as well on the DFX. Here you adjust the setting down and the target response becomes a double note similar the that of elongated iron.
As for technological advances remember the DFX is a old rejected Minelab design with a frequency removed.
Trog who post's on U.K. Detector Net and was a big DFX fan has been staying with me for several weeks since his house got hit by the pre Christmas tornado. Result is that his DFX got sold a couple of weeks back and he's gone back to the XLT. A post over there will get you a load of reasons.

If I was in the market for another machine it would not be the DFX. The MXT is a great machine but like the DFX, noisy. The underated M6 offers great performance at a steal of a price. I would keep the XLT and match it with a M6.

Maybe you missed the point...The question was what is the difference? !!!!!! I think it is funny you name a few advancements, there are more, right away people have to try to say the xlt is better...But if someone says the DFX has some advanced features....right away someone has to say no the xlt is better....that was not the point here! The question was what is the difference?.... I listed 10 differences, as I said there are plenty more! As far as owning one or the other that is personal choice up to the individual. My DFX will pay for itself within its first year, so that works for me. DFX-Gregg >>No looking back<<<<

The XLT IS a very good detector and DFX is also a good detector.
Now it come down to what detector you will be HAPPY to use.
I had the XLT and DFX but for me my best detector and Quote(( Best detector for ME is the XL PRO and M6.}}
A GOOD DETECTOR IS ONE THAT YOU WANT TO TAKE OUT ALL THE TIME.

Roger asks is it worth the change. I would say if you want one machine that will cover a lot of bases including wets salt then the DFX is the one to go for.
If you are prepared to have a range of detectors you can do better in the long run.
I would stronly suggest he doesn't sell or trade in his XLT until he has used the DFX in his area. Keep both for a time then keep the one that delivers.
You have posted on the Whites Classroom Forum in the last few days in a thread where people talk about the 6000 and XLT being the top relic machines/King of the Hill etc. 'Save the 6.59 frequency'. Monte buying a brand new XLT just in case the XLT is discontinued.
Many of the 'improvements' in the last few years in the detecting world turn out to be not so great in the long run.
Best thing that could be said to Roger is he should try and borrow ANY new machine he is considering or at least see if there's many being used by members of his local detecting club and what success he's having.

In my reference all it says is there is a difference. Then go on to say it is strictly up to Roger. You responded to my post about the difference right???? Not Rogers!!!!!!<Take a look!!:stars: DFX-Gregg

Roger I think you will find great support for your choice! Most who have the DFX are extremely happy! I know I am! Finding support is very easy, any question I have had has been answered in the DFX classroom site. There are a couple of guys, Larry and Ron that know there stuff and are always willing to help, as well as others. Also I am sure you are aware there are other sites you can look to also. But I get my best advice and quickest response within these forums! Also the turn and go programs are a breeze! And updating within the White's detectors is obviously a good idea if you have ever needed any repairs or help you probably know that. Not sure you may want to check if buying new, they recently had $200 in free shopper dollars available! Nice for that extra coil and accessories. DFX-Gregg<<<<No looking back!

THANKS FOR ALL THE ADVICE. I WENT AHEAD AND BOUGHT NEW DFX. ALSO GOT ALOT OF FREEBIES AND A $200 COUPON FOR A NEW COIL (4x6 dd) AND LESCHE DIGGER AND POUCH. ALL FOR $14.85 AFTER REBATE.:super: STILL HAVE THE XLT AND THE CLASSIC IDX WONT BE SELLING ANY OF THEM.:twodetecting: FROM WHAT I CAN SEE IT IS GOING TO BE A GREAT MACHINE. HOPEFULLY I AM ABLE TO TRY IT TODAY IF THE GROUND IS NOT TO FROZEN. WE GOT ALITTLE SNOW AND THE TEMPS HAVE BEEN IN THE 20'S FOR ABOUT 4 DAYS NOW. GOT THE COVERALLS AND STOCKING CAP READY TO GO. HOPEFULLY I WILL BE POSTING ALOT AGAIN USE TO POST ALOT THEN WORK AND ALL TOOK UP MY TIME AND MISSED IT. SO I TOLD MY SELF YOU DONT LIVE FOREVER SO DO WHAT YOU LIKE AND IAM BACK. THANKS AGAIN FOR ALL THE ADVICE AND HH ROGER

don't make the assumption you are using an XLT. one of the biggest mistakes people make is that they understand how it operates because they are familiar with the XLT. Most of the bad mouthing you hear from people who go back to the XLT is because they never took a fresh outlook when setting up the DFX. And yes, I had an XLT and fortunately had Dave Z. to help me when I switched over to the DFX.

Pap very well said I ask Larry for help all the time in the DFX classroom. I even send him a pm if necessary. Also Roger you will like the VDI normalization should be very helpful, especially at first. The normalization changes the readings over to the same as the XLT. I guess we will be seeing a lot of you in the DFX classroom!
DFX-Gregg

Roger make sure you stop by in the DFX classroom, you will see it is very active in there.
DFX-Gregg

Congratulations on your new detector Roger. You will have lots of questions and we are here to help. I recommend the Book Digging Deeper with the DFX by Jeff Foster, a college level course on understanding and using the DFX.

WHERE IN ILL. ARE YOU AT I AM FROM ILL. ORIGINALLY.
