Deus verses Minelab 3030 for United States silver coins

Anyone in the US who has had good results on silver coins with the Minelab 3030 also used the Deus and compared results.

I have owned both. They both will go deep in my area. I think the 3030 is a bit more accurate with the target ID. The Deus with the 11" coil is impressive. May be deeper than the 3030 when setup certain ways but the target ID is not quite as accurate.

Deeper than the CTX 17" coil?

Don't fall for this one guys

I was asking a honest question of his experience. I have no dog in the fight I own both the Deus and the CTX with all three coils.

I did not have the 17" coil for the CTX so I could not tell you. I know in my area that I could get silver coins (quarter) down to maybe 10 inches max. I think the Deus with the 11" coil would do that too. I just got the 11" coil yesterday and only got a chance to try it for around 30 minutes in the field. I have some test targets buried in the ground and it hit them real well. Maybe I will bury a silver quarter at 10" and see if it can get it. May not be the best test but it would give me an idea. I think I will film it.......;o)

Thanks to the OP for asking this valid question & Bill S. for taking the time to answer it. Because I still find myself on the fence between these two units as a "primary/go to" detector in regards to the overall TID accuracy for silver at depth in the U.S. Although all detectors can struggle with this to a degree, some just do so more than others.

Once again, there's no "slam dunk" detector on the current market. Although the one thing that caught my eye with the Deus along with the many other things that makes it very appealing vs. the CTX, is the fact that Andy S. has gone in "Full Tilt" with endorsing this detector in the U.S. That right there tells me something, because after all he's one of the best.

I know this topic is subjective, just saying... I'm still leaning towards getting the Deus w/ 11" coil before spring for numerous reasons.

Th reason for my original question is I am planning on buying a new detector this spring. I have had some experience with the Minelab 3030 and like what I have seen but I also like what I am reading about the Deus. I wonder if it's 18khz frequency would make it a better gold detector and possibly a more versitile detector than the 3030. I am willing to give up a little on depth and target ID for the lighter weight of the Deus but still want something that will do well on silver coins.

I will be VERY surprised if the 11" coil would not hit a quarter at 10".

Bill,

Run it in 8K with 0 reactivity and silencer at no more than 1, push the sensitivity to 92 or more if possible. I bet you can lift the coil just a little and still hit it.

All thin, tiny low conductors are easy for the Deus running at 18K but so is all the little pieces of Aluminum trash. Thats something that no Manufacturer has figured out yet.

What machine do you have in mind, if you own "both the Deus and CTX with all three coils"?

Meaning the CTX3030 will be much better in salt water conditions.

I have both units, the Deus with 9 inch coil, CTX3030 with 11 and 6 inch coils. Both units ain't going anywhere ! They compliment each other very well.

If I had to answer the question as to which one I would pick if I only had one to use, then since I mostly salt water beach hunt, it would be the CTX. If I was primarily a park hunter, dry sander and iron ridden site hunter, it would be the Deus.

As always, conditions dictate.

BINGO! we have a winner.

I do own both machines and agree 100% with Bill. Now as far as the 17", I don't think so. At least for me the 17" has more than proved to be a deeper coil than my stock 11" And dare I say I'm of the belief the separation is a bit better as well. I know, crazy huh?

I have a relatively young test garden in the backyard with 4 quarters - 3 clad and one silver. The silver quarter is 10" deep and clean and is easily detectable with the Deus in Reactivity 2, silencer 2, 8 kHz, and Sens 85. I can raise the coil a couple of inches and still get it.

I have another quarter which is 12" deep and clean - but for this one I have to go nearly wide open to even get a squeak from the headphones. It would be a signal I would honestly NOT dig if in the field (there's a lot more to learn about Deus, I know).

There's yet another quarter at 12" depth but this one has 4 pieces of approx. 1/2" x 1/2" can slaw between 3-4" deep, all can slaw pieces are in a horizontal orientation - and not matter what I can't get it on any setting. I hit the slaw just fine but there's no hint of a deeper target.

The last quarter I have is 13" deep and has a couple iron nails on either side of the coin at 6 and 7 inches depth - again I can't even get a hint of a signal no matter what I set the Deus to.

This is all with the 11" round coil and with my limited Deus experience. I would love to see someone with a 3030 stop by my place and give the test garden a go - I'm really curious to know what I may be missing with the Deus below, say 9 inches. I believe the 3030 is a deeper machine from what I've read and seen online, but never having owned one personally my curiosity is definitely sparked! Personally I'd prefer better target separation as opposed to deeper target ID, but I see the value in having an accurate VDI on an 11" dime

CZ--

I'd love to see the results of you trying your test garden with the Deus at 12 kHz, reactivity = 1, silencer = 0, sensitivity of at least 90 (if it's stable, I can usually get to 92), and discrimination < or = ~6.8. I bet that improves your response on the quarter with no trash. I think there's a chance of hearing the quarter with nails, though that's really deep. Less certain about the quarter with can slaw.at that reactivity. I typically hunt in trash with these settings, but bump up reactivity when I need to. I've learned to deal with hearing some iron, but I prefer that to hearing the partial buzz of iron trying to be muted, which often throws me more than hearing the iron! :)

Let us know!
Thanks,
Rich

I guess if you keep adding a larger coil, you can always say Detector A will go deeper than Detector B with a smaller coil.

When the Deus 11" coil was introduced, it changed the game so to speak in terms of now being able to compare 11" coil to 11" coil and the results that people have seen attest to the fact that the 11" coil on the Deus leveled the playing field and in many areas / applications, gets the edge over the CTX 3030.

I had the 17" coil on my CTX for a short period of time and regardless of how well balanced it is, I could not swing it for more than an hour or so without switching hands and taking breaks . . . . I guess I got tired of telling co-workers why I came in on Monday like this . . . . . . it has since found a new home - the coil that is :surrender:

As people that know me can attest, I use what works and am not brand loyal to the point that I will not even look at another brand. I have a "healthy" collection of detectors since I do some of all types of hunting and there is a mix of all different brands including some no longer in business - but each fills a niche and does what I want it to.

Minelab clearly owned the mountain top for many years and I can say that I had a hand in the design and development of many of their detectors starting with their initial entry into the US market . . . matter of fact some of the initial meetings and design work took place in my living room . . . man that dates me doesn't it?

FBS technology is pretty amazing and the amount of treasure it has recovered is staggering. But times change and technology does as well and as new detectors are developed, I am always willing to take a look at them and see how they compare to what I take in the field. When I first saw the Deus I was somewhat skeptical - the size was too small to offer real performance, the unit was wireless and it was not made in the US . . . . well, after several trips of side-by-side comparisons, it was clear that despite being a VLF detector, it was doing things differently and it became my go to machine for many applications. I still use my Minelabs and probably will for some time but in terms of finds here in the States, my silver count is right up there and most has come from sites that were so trashy other detectors simply avoided it.

Don't discount either one in the hands of someone that knows how to set it up . . . they are both killer detectors . . . . but weight, balance, recovery speed do make a difference in the field after 8 hours of serious hunting. The FBS units still recover their fair share for me as well and they stay fully charged . . . . as they say, "pick your poison!"

CZ, I'm curious to know if you follow this setup if you'll actually hit that 12" quarter.
