Went out last night to the homesite that has produced many tokens, Wheats, junk jewelry, and rare silver in the past. I decided to stay close to the area that used to be the front door and driveway edge and was looking for masked targets.
Set up Deus Fast and the only thing I changed was GB to "82" manual and started hunting. I wanted to see how much iron was there after hitting this same area with 4 and 8k programs using "0" iron volume. As expected, I got a lot of grunts - some loud, some pretty soft; but it was apparent that there was still a lot of remaining non-ferrous targets present. There was lots of can slaw, and I expected to dig a TON of it, but I got to where I could call the small pieces of slaw fairly easily. Started getting a number of high tone targets, but the VDI was not consistent on a cross swing, but I dug it anyway. Found a lot of electrical cord ends - as if someone had a collection at some point and spilled it onto the driveway edge!!! Found about 5 or 6 of these cord prongs and then got a loud and large"94" which turned out to be a 6" X 6" piece of aluminum siding. Once that was out of the way I had two more high-toned targets lurking nearby that were undoubtedly previously masked. Pulled one more prong end while the other target was a 1944 Wheat, this one sounded a little better on a cross swing. It was only 3" deep while the large piece of siding was 7" down.
Got into a very slaw-y area and decide to move away from the house a couple of steps. It was a bit quieter out here - less iron content and less total targets. I got a sweet-sounding high tone that presented without any VDI, but had the "round sound" in one direction only. Cross sweep of this target I only got an iron "grunt". Turned out to be another Wheat, this one dated 1946 and about 6" down. There were a couple nails in the hole, but I have definitely dug more "contaminated" holes containing coins in lower frequencies - should have scanned the target before digging with a different program and compared the response...maybe next time!
Then I walked up on a very faint high-tone target, but it was consistent both ways. No VDI on this one, either. It was no deeper than 2" since the first scoop retrieved it...had some difficulty finding it with the ProPointer, and at first I thought it was just another piece of aluminum. I threw it in my pocket and decided to take a closer look after tumbling...
Making my way back to the car I got probably the strongest target yet, and found 2 clad quarters and a zincoln in the same hole. Rang up around "95" if I remember correctly but had a long "footprint" - many times these types of signals are multiple and stacked coins - will have to review that particular area on the next hunt!
After tumbling I wasn't expecting anything too great - but I noticed a small, shiny object with a floral design that stood out amongst the copper and aluminum items. A sterling necklace hasp was looking back at me...ALMOST skunked!!! But not quite!!!
I'm beginning to get comfortable with Deus Fast and the learning curve continues with this fantastic detector! May have to re-visit some of the rental houses now!
