Deus Depth question . . . yes, I'm frustrated . . . really frustrated

Tony N (Michigan)

I have a question for those of you who are really seasoned with the Deus.

I've been detecting 8 to 11 kHz.
TX 2 (tried 1 and 3)
Disc 0.0
Sens: high enough for stability
5 tones
Reactivity: 0 (I find my detector goes deeper the less reactivity I use.)
Silencer: 2
Audio Response: 5
Notch: 97-99
9" coil that came with the detector.
My soil is pretty sandy with not much mineralization according to the right vertical bar.

When I get a hit around 87 or greater and it **appears** to be deep according to the small amount it shows upper right on the horseshoe and faint sound,
it turns out to be either a modern dime or quarter at only about 6 inches.

Now then, if the detector is just barely picking up coins at 6 inches, how the heck am I able to find any older coins at the 10 to 13 inch level?

Are my settings screwed up?

I can just **barely** hit a 9" penny in my test garden but am not sure I would dig such a hit in real-world detecting. It blends in a lot with the sounds of everything else.

Are most of you only getting about 6-7 inches? Or is there a better setup? Do I need the 11" coil?

Frustrated.

back ground balance down to actual number and try it and then back it 3 numbers below actual number and let us know what happens.

One more thing is it a zinc penny if so change it out for a copper and the deus to me likes siver coins at depth better than clad. I got a 10 inch clad quarter and it doesn't like it to good, but it will BUST a 10 inch silver quarter so what type of coins your using will have some effect imo. OMT a nine inch penny aint to shabby just saying. Cut the silencer to -1 and cut the reactivity to 2 and put it in 7 kh and apply the ground balance trick above and let me know what happens. you might have to put reactivity on one but try it both ways.

Try it with silencer at -1 since you have little mineralization. Silencer reduces depth. Manually set ground balance to match what the machine sees (upper right number on horseshoe screen). Don't turn machine on until you are away from car and other metal including rings on your fingers, and until lower shaft is out to the length you use while hunting, and hold it at waist level until the speaker question comes up onscreen. Notch also affects depth, turn it off. Otherwise just keep experimenting even with settings that aren't supposed to make sense, sometimes they work anyway. Make changes one at a time.

My 9" HF coil will hit a quarter (barely) at 12" at 28 khz in standard Goldfield program, deeper than my other machines will. That makes no sense but there it is.

That's about all I can come up with for you. Good luck.

I can hit a 10 silver quarter barely in my garden with 5 x9.5 elliptical coil in 74 kh go figure ??????????? It hits it better in 14 but hey ill take lol

Reactivty 1 or 2
Silencer -1
Sens at least 90,,little higher like 93 if possible.
Audio report 5

Pumping GB
Get the notch off the unit.

Freqs, 8kh 12khz even 18khz
No ground notch applied.

Reactivity 0,,,better have some mild soil.
Also using will be more coil swing speed sensitive.
I don't think many folks use,,,I don't.

Last month I was relic hunting in a pine thicket ( Im in North Carolina) and got a flying eagle penny at a measured 11". I was careful to dig because of some good buttons that came from this site so Im sure of depth. Before the end of the day my son dug a indian head that was a good 13 " Soil is very low in mineralation.I was using 9" stock coil and my son uses 11". We both were hunting in stock relic program which I find is the deepest. I have tested my deus in my test garden against my CTX 3030 and I can hit a 58 cal. bullet buried (6 years ago) at 12" and my CTX wont get it. Hope this helps.

Full Tones seems to help with fringe targets mineralized soil or not. I've pulled a few 9" deep coins mostly pennies and dimes from several of our local parks with the 9" coil, but the new elliptical coil is looking promising...

Usually run right on top of the GB indicator, maybe +1 or +2 points positive if I'm digging too much aluminum. Our soil routinely runs 1/2 to 2/3 of the mineralization bar and you have dig it all...I don't know how many coins sounded like beavertails at the 7-9" level and vice versa - always always always dig those iffy targets to the limit of your patience!

I've recently been running 8khz TX3 Reactivity 1 Silencer 1 Audio Response 3 but our soil will make the unit false if Reactivity = 0 and you'll end up digging tons of "phantom targets". Just switching to 8kHz made my aluminum finds go through the roof but it likes nickels and low conductors much better than 4kHz, identical settings.

Go back to your test garden on that 9" penny and get used to those types of targets - the VDI many times won't give you anything, and if it does it will indicate much higher VDI-wise than a shallower identical target. Nickels especially....Bury a 9" nickel and see how it hits vs a shallower one - and most importantly...audio is king!

One more thing.......don't set GB to autotrack, it's a little quirky.

I wrote down your ideas and took the Deus out to the coin garden. Success!

It hits really good now and even got it to give me an 84 and 85 on the digital scale of target conductivity! not always but sometimes. I could probably bury that copper penny at 12 inches.
It gave a really good high hit sound. That's really important! Before it was just **barely** sounding off as far as sound goes. And I mean just barely. Definitely not a digable target. Now it is.

I tried the set up in 4, 8, 11 and 18 kHz. I notice that the 18 kHz gave the sweetest, sharpest sound whereas the 4 kHz gave a slightly muddied sound.
Maybe the 4 kHz gave a more muddied sound due to automatically setting the detector in a TX setting of 3? I wish XP Deus would make it so the 4 kHz
setting would allow us to adjust the TX value. I hope they are reading this. It seems totally anal retentive to make it so we cant adjust that setting.

I feel so much more confident now!

Now I'm going over to the farm that was founded around 1830 that I've taken large cents out of and a half dime and other old coins years ago. I hope I haven't hunted it out with my Explorer.

Life is great when we have people to help us along this path. I was really frustrated this morning trying to get this right. I wanted to wrap the detector around a tree. Thanks so much for your input. It is so much appreciated! :detecting:

So how did you end up setting your Deus up??

Where was your silencer setting ?

The relic program is in 3.2, are you using 3.2 version?

Hi Listener,
I have 4.0 and have a relic program in it but it is way down the list after the 10 basic programs. It is #17 in my list of programs.
