"Detuning the Explorer SE"

I was wondering how to go about tuning it so that you can check around and under metal fences.The old whites I had years ago you could pinpoint then detune it enough so that you could actually get within a couple of inches of a cyclone fence.I was able to find quite a few old coins at a fairgrounds that way. Thanks for any advice.
I have the 5x7 coil also,
