Detectors revisited .................

Elton

New member
Over the years as you venture further and further into this great hobby you sometimes forget why you liked certain detectors

I started detecting using a Whites detector .......... through the end of the 70's all of the 80's and well into the 90's I used different model Whites......

..........................For one reason or another I switched and started using other brands.. and of course they had some of the same, and some different features..

The last long usage of a Whites was my beloved XLT ................ I found a ton of old coins with that Great Whites detector. I then for only a short time tried a DFX ........ It worked well too..
I had all the Di Pro models etc ,etc... I think you get the picture.. I was a Whites man..

For the last several years I have tried many, and I mean many different brands ..but was never really satisfied on all aspects of what I was using .... Sure they worked really well , were deep..and found some fantastic finds..

I just bought a really nice Whites detector. New to me but used. A high ender too ........... Testing it I now remember all the things I loved about the Whites

Complete control on settings, Good sounds, bad sounds on Targets ..Reliable target Id with Icons, and Numeric ID plus a signagraph read out on one screen all at once....plus pull the trigger and you have accurate depth.. Plus Multi frequencies ...... working together, or separate for what will work best in the area your detecting..

Add to that Easy auto air and ground balance with ground tracking that really works .... Wow no wonder I used Whites for so long.. I'm just wondering why I ever started using any other model as much as I like all the features I just mentioned above...

I was also recently reminded about Whites great service...an earlier post I made about getting a Manual... ......... Sometimes you just have to look backwards to see what should be in your future.........

I'm thinking a VX3 might be a good fit for me..............Anyway thanks for reading and I hope you too can look back remember what you loved about the machines you used, and possibly retry one then go from there on your next purchase....

I know what you mean as I have had a soft spot for Whites also. I started on XLT Rainbow and found my first silver. I always wanted an XL-PRO so I bought one earleir this year and had a blast with it. Sure its not as deep as my CZ-3D and as good in trash as my E-trac,But it is fun to use with the old analog meter. Sometimes I think we forget why we got in the hobby in the first place which for me was to have fun. I think alot of newbee's today get to hung up on how much silver they can find in a year. It is a competititon instead of being fun.

Elton, I too have always liked Whites detectors. While not the deepest detector around, a well adjusted XLT is still a potent detector. As a matter of fact, several years back, I made a trade with a local guy(Madison I think) and I traded him for a XLT Rainbow. He told me he had got it from a fellow in Cleveland named Elton. It must have been your detector. I used Whites detectors exclusively during 2013 and had a pretty good year. The days of me finding over a hundred silver coins are over, but the DFX and VX3 did a great job for me. In my opinion, both of these detectors are super accurate and fun to use. When I first tried a DFX ten years ago, I was intimidated by all the adjustments. When I figured it out, I just set it forgot it. I was always afraid I might miss something good if I got it too far out of wack. Now since my silver spots are getting scarce, I started doing some serious playing around with the many adjustments the DFX and VX3. I figured the hunted out places I have been were all dried up and I had nothing to lose. Both the DFX and VX3 surprised me when I started doing some serious tinkering. When you get out this spring, do some playing around with your DFX. One really neat feature of a DFX or V series detector is the ability to hunt in a single frequency. Almost every time I do this, I find a silver coin. Another thing to try with your DFX is a V rated 10x12 SEF coil. I bought one last spring for my DFX and it is an impressive coil. When I traded the DFX for a VX3, the coil went with me. It worked great on the DFX, but even better on the VX3. This is the white coil. Good luck with the Whites detector you use in 2014 and above all, have fun.

Just the thrill of the hunt is what detecting is really all about.. Once you get in that " I have to find Silver, or Gold" mode. You really lose a lot. Your never really happy just detecting and go home disappointed many times.. Sure it is nice to find Silver and Gold. But if you become obsessed you have lost the idea of the hobby ..Having Fun. Doing something you enjoy..!!!!!!!!!

Good post Elton and I know what you mean.I have owned many detectors over the years and have recently gone back to a whites M6.This machine is simplicity itself and has great performance.I do mostly beach detecting now as I have recently moved to the coast and the M6 works brilliantly on the wet sand as well as inland sites.I'm thinking about doing a bit of wading soon so it is a toss up between the garrett seahunter and the whites beach hunter 300.The whites obviously has the advantage of discrim but I suppose the garrett is probably deeper.Whatever I get i'll never part with my M6 as for what I want it for it's probably the best detector i've owned.

Great post Elton . Like Nauti Neil I'm an M6 user also . It's seen several other detectors come and go and I know for sure it's going to see one more ( maybe two) go very shortly .
