There's a lot to be examined with this synopsis. More voltage does not mean more power in reference to CMOS electronics. A good example is cell phones. The old shoe box cell phones used to use a strong big 12v battery and got coverage by increasing transmission voltage to towers causing 1-2 hr battery life. Look at the size of the newer batteries in cell phones. About the size of a pack of Tic-Tacs. Battery life is 4 hrs. This is because of the efficiency of reception on both ends, the towers and the phone itself. So it would be safe to say that the reception is more of a key than the transmission. Metal detectors transmission is a large draw on battery life and in most cases the transmitted signal is way beyond the typical 8" depth. Frequency does affect depth, but for the most part, certain frequencies just move more efficiently through earth than others. Since the reception is the key, it's the sensitivity of the reception more than the transmission of the signal that determines what a unit detects.
