Detector sling idea

WV62

Well-known member
I have been playing around with making a sling that works on all my detectors and I think I have just about got it and thought I would share the idea.

I tried a bunch of different rigs but nothing seemed to work as good as this simple rig. Now all my detectors have the handle shaft welded or attached to the detector shaft so for now this rig works best for that type of detector.

Just get about 4' of bungee cord I used 5/16" size and I bought a package of end hooks to fit that size cord. I installed a hook on one end with a simple knot, then I slipped the other end hook on the other end. Do not install with a knot just yet, you will need to adjust to fit your detector and then do the knot and lock in place.

Now take a wire tie and do a loose fit around the detector shaft just in front of the handle (coil side of the handle). Now when a say loose I mean loose enough you can get something like a pencil in between the shaft and the wire tie, this is where the second hook on the bungee cord will attach to the detector.

For right handers, take the hook that is already installed on the bungee and hook it on your back left side belt loop or on your belt just to the left of a belt loop. Now this needs to be pretty far left. Now take the other end of the bungee cord across your back and over your right shoulder and down your front right side. Then hook the other bungee hook on to the wire tie on the detector, the hand grip on the detector should act as a stop for the wire tie.

Now adjust the hook up or down on the bungee to get some or most of the weight off the detector. I would do a temp knot and play with this until you are pretty sure you got it where you want it and then set the hook in place.

Should be good to go.

Awhile back when I had troubles with my arm, I made this simple sling. I haven't had to use it in a long time. I made it using a strap from an old bag I had. The adjustable strap makes getting the proper tension a snap. It unhooks quickly from the detector to dig.

Now that looks to be a better rig than my single bungee cord. I have some strap material I will see if I can do the new and improved.

For sure would be easier on the shoulder and I like the adjusting part. Nice

Thank you for sharing the design.

Oh, lord version 4

Hay, big brother I just thought of something!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
When I bought my Teknetics 8500 the hip mount straps that came with it were Dickies suspender straps, these things might be just what you need! They didn't work very good for the detector so I replaced them, but they might work out for your project. They're new, very nice, FREE!!!!!!!!!!!
[size=small]Bungee's not included,
some part's sold separately,
other action figures not included,
warning small parts can be a choking hazard for small children,
Some material in this strap has been found in the state of California to cause cancer,
The dye and other coloring used in this strap are NOT green compliant,
Use of this strap for any purpose other than what it was designed for could cause injury or even DEATH! at which the manufacture is NOT liable!

I remember and that's the one I used until I sold my CZ. Mine was only slightly modified.

That's a great idea.

Forgot to mention I got my strap from an old computer bag. The different types of available straps are endless and prevalent at most garage sales for under a buck.

I am glad I put my sling idea out there but Rob,s is a big improvement over mine. I have made 3 of them off Rob's design, one for me and one for each of my brothers. The only thing I stayed with from my idea was the wire tie around the detector shaft that seems to work real good and I couldn't come up with a D ring.

A picture ( or pictures) is worth a thousand words.

Nice rig.
Just a cople days worth of swinging my 1266 ......

Glad it worked for you. The straps and rings are off old bags you can get cheap at Goodwill etc. The D ring is fast to unhook when digging.

Thanks to all for the good info! I just about gave up Mding because of artritus. I'm going to try the strap-sling rig to see if it will allow me to continue detecting.

Good luck with your sling, hope it keeps you swinging for years to come.
