Detector recommendations

I am looking for a detector that I can bring to work and use in my down time. It should be light, compact and not delicate. Odds are that I'll be hunting trashy areas so some discrimination and small coil would be ideal Waterproof would be a plus. I am fine with a used older unit. I have been looking at the low end Garrett's and remember seeing one that was just a headphone? Don't remember what that one was , lol
Any recommendations you may have for this would be very appreciated.

Don't get anything under the at pro as they don't have good audio and I mean there is no modulation so everything sounds the same shallow or deep.of course they have different tones but like every target is same pitch and loudness no matter the tone.i have a pro and my buddy has a ace 400 and it drives me crazy.if your thinking about really detecting seriously for years I would save my money and get something you really like and won't look back in months or a year and wish you would have gotten a better onr

Nothing wrong with the audio of the AT line, it's all just preference. Nuggetnoggin, Aquachigger, and The Hoover Boys to name just 3 well known YT metal detectorists all run the AT line and are very successful. Any machine is only as good as the operator, so most importantly get to really know your machine and what it's telling you.

AT-PRO has been around for many years and bang for the buck still one of the best deals out there for a waterproof machine. If you are just a beginner you don't want to spend a fortune or get to complicated a machine it is a good detector that you can easily pay for in one season of detecting.

Thanks for responding. I ended up getting a nice used Fisher F70 with 2 coils for a great price. Seems like a powerful and sensitive machine.
Now I'm looking for an inexpensive tesoro for my kid to toss around.

Look at the Teknetics Minuteman (used to be the Eurotek Pro).

Cheap, but supposed to perform well above its price point.

It's currently selling for $100 off.
At $149 with free shipping you'll be hard pressed to find a new machine like it. Contact a dealer to get the $100 off code.
