I just received my new Detector Pro Grey Ghost Deep Woods headphones for my Sovereign GT. Previously I'd been using the "part of the package" headphones that I've gotten with detector purchases. Now, the inexpensive headphones do work, but I've found them to be less than comfortable for long hunts and they don't block out enough of the ambient noise level. I primarily hunt the beaches and between the roar of the surf and the crowd noises, hearing those subtle changes in threshold that signal a deep target is difficult.
So I have been researching the different premium grade headphones and decided on the Grey Ghost Deep Woods since they are weatherproof, do not have exposed metal that could rust in the salt air environment and offer superior noise reduction.
I received them today and let me tell you that the build quality is first rate. Heavy duty construction throughout, they fit like a glove and ambient noise is blocked out like nobodies business. I hooked them up to my GT and headed out into my front yard (which is my test garden) to see how they perform. Now my yard is loaded with metal trash from many years of new roof (nails), kids toys, pull tabs, etc. There is one area about 10'x10' from which I've pulled 40 or 50 pennies, but no other coins. I've hunted it with many different detectors including a Discovery 3300, Garrett Ground Hog, DFX, MXT, CZ-20, Beachhunter ID, Sov XS-2a Pro, Quattro, Sov GT and Excalibur's. All were used with either the stock hard wired or the "cheapy" headphones I figured that I have pretty much left only the trash targets.
With the GT & the Grey Ghost Deep Woods I was able to hear the subtle differences in tones that I couldn't before. In fact, within just a few minutes, I found a 1959 Roosevelt dime that was down about 7 inches. I won't chalk it up to luck as I have hunted (gridded) this small area too many times to have missed it. I can only attribute it to being able to hear the target better.
I highly recommend that anyone looking for a boost in finding targets give these headphones a close look. And I do not have any financial interest in Detector Pro. I'm just a very satisfied and happy customer.
