Detector Overuse

That is the diagnosis I got yesterday from a hand surgeon. Seems that I have been over using my Sovereign GT and my Excalibur II. I get to blame the problem on Minelab. LOL.

My middle finger on my right hand has what he called "Trigger Finger". When I bend the finger completely into my palm it does not want to straighten and when it does it pops.

After we discussed the options I decided that surgery would be the better option since the problem has been developing over the past year and a steroid injection would not be expected to have a high rate of success.

Minor Surgery as an outpatient and I will have at most a half inch scar. They cut the tendon sheath so that the tendon can move freely.

Just wanted to warn yall that you are in danger when you go out there with those two detectors. Do I plan on quitting. Absolutely No Way and that is what I told the Doctors PA and then told him. He told me that I would need to give it some rest after surgery. Wonder if I can swing them with my left hand.

I had carple tunnel bout 12 years ago.not detector related but I do switch off every so often as to give both arms a breather.i swing with my right 90% of the time but if I feel any fatigue or discomfort I switch to lefty for a few minutes.it seems to be working for me. Hope your surgery and recovery go well.

I had trigger finger on both hands at one time. Putting a larger bike handle cover on my straight shaft took care of of that hand almost immediately. I still have an occasional LOCKED finger on my scoop hand in the morning. Doc said yes its agravaged by detecting.... but it fairly common on us older folk.

I was considering wrapping the handle with the Stuff they wrap on the grip of a tennis racket. It should make for a little larger handle to grip and also might be a bit softer.

Wow, George that's a bummer. Glad its just outpatient surgery tho. But take care and follow the Dr's instructions to the letter. No macho 'gotta get back in the water before I'm healed' stuff.

I wrapped my Safari grip with 3M Vetrap to make it thicker and protect the foam grip that was tearing. It works GREAT. Fatter grip fits my hand better, and much softer too which seems to mean less fatigue- I don't seem to need to switch off to the left hand as often. No sticky tape residue either. I get mine at my local CoOp, but here a link to show you all what I am talking about:

Comes in all kinds of colors for the more Stylish amongst you all.

George,I've had problems with my hands also, hope your Doctors solves the problem. With the weather here over detecting isn't going to be a problem.I also hope your recovery goes well and your out detecting again. Ron

Trigger finger heap me to both hands. Bothers me mostly at night but does cause some problems at other times.

Ron are you making any digital Meyers for the Sov GT, if so how much are they and do you post to Australia, also do they have a backlight, also do you have picture of them please.
Thanks
Derek

I hope everything works out well for you. Please keep us informed how things went, as I am thinking about seeing a doctor myself.

Good luck George. I think your making a good move by doing it now. Funny how many of us consider what part of the detecting season will be impacted by elective surgery. Got one I'm delaying...need the thumb joint reconstructed on my left hand.

Arthritis has about destroyed the joint on my left thumb. Hand Surgeons Pa said we can work on that next. In my area it is much more comfortable to detect in the fall, winter and spring than it is in the summer. High Humidity and High Temps make excursions much shorter.

George,
I have the same problem with my right hand (machine holder) and with the finger next to my little one. Trying Blue Emu and getting good results.Going out for the low tide this weekend and see if I can get something good for a change. Hope you aren't out too long.
